Normal ? or OCD?

My family and friends would tell you I'm not housework obsessed....in fact some would say I only do it when its not possible to leave it any longer.BUT ...I had to remake the beds this morning after my grandaughter "helped" by making them for me .I like the duvet to come to just in front of the pillows, the pillows stacked with one standing and the boudoir cushion placed in between.Thats not how they were done.It made me think about how many other things I change or rearrange to how I like them .Then I realised thats probably why I do all the housework etc myself .So is this OCD ? Here was I thinking I was very casual about things house related and it seems I'm not.

Weelll... if the cat is asleep on my bed before I make it, I really don't like to disturb him... that's my excuse anyway. But really I hate housework, I see it as an interruption to an interesting life. People coming tends to prompt me to have a good go at it. Probably I'm just a slob by nature!

Oh dear, I am going to have to shut a few doors if any of you visit!blush
It's not a mess but it is home.

I agree with you, Paddyann. I do think these fussy habits are a bit OCD and can understand that others are not so uptight about having things 'just so'. However, I love having my house looking gorgeous and 'right' and feel that if it's my labour making it look how I want it that's skin off no one else's nose.

I work like the servants in 'Downton Abbey' and enjoy the fruits of my labour like the Dowager Countess.

She beats it (the furniture) into submission with vigorous hovering several times a day. She also counts the vegetables at dinner and they have to be an even number (she is an accountant).

Trousers as opposed to rousers!!!!!

Izabella Tue 02-May-17 10:21:07

I was accused of having OCD as I put socks on the line paired up and everything in order with all rousers together, then tops, then blouses etc. All underwear together and in person order. Sounds OTT right? Mum was blind and it meant I could hand out the washing and she made a darned good job of folding and putting away as she could tell what was what. I have carried on as it makes it easier for whoever else puts ours away

I like my bedroom just so.
Minimalistic as can't sleep if our room is in anyway untidy.

In January I bought a lovely white quilt cover adorned with butterflies in different shades of purple.
I thought it would be just the thing for the dull days of winter .

The quilt looked fresh and inviting but........
Ahrrh The matching pillows were so...wrong
The butterflies are at the opening vents
And are not a mirror image
which means to put them outwards one cover is always upside down

My solution was to buy another set and mix and match the pillow slips.
unfortunately the were sold out in store and the internet.

I know very well that this is not a world problem .blush
I accept it is just one of life's little irritants

Jalima1108 Tue 02-May-17 10:02:34

My friend was surprised that I don't treat the mattress with insecticide every six months vq

The spare beds have throws on them as they are made up ready for visitors.

My DGD 'helps' by bouncing on all the beds.

DanniRae Tue 02-May-17 09:41:07

Er Teetime - don't understand your last post??

Teetime Tue 02-May-17 09:06:58

I am not as bad as my sister whose furniture is frightened of her.

Teetime Tue 02-May-17 09:06:04

All the beds in my house have to be show house perfect everyday other wise I start to feel quite sick. When my daughter comes to stay I am forever fretting about the state of her bed and bedroom. I'm the same about everything else, washing up must be done and not left in the sink, dishwasher emptied asap, washing on line, in tumble dryer or basket nowwhere else and must not be left unwashed for more than two days; all clothes must face same way in wardrobe on the same hangars etc etc etc. I quite enjoy housework and yes I do get out a lot and do lots of other things.

annodomini Tue 02-May-17 08:58:06

As no-one seems likely to invade the privacy of my bedroom, the bed is likely to remain unmade or the duvet is folded back for airing.

vampirequeen Tue 02-May-17 08:55:59

I fold the quilt back to let the mattress air in the vain hope that the dry air will kill off a few dust mites at the same time lol. But that's only because I'm allergic to dust mites (well the nasty bits they leave everywhere) and sneezing fits are no fun when you get into bed desperate to go to sleep.

I can't leave the house without making the bed, but am not fussy as to how it's done. As long as the pillows are plumped, sheet straightened and duvet given a shake before putting it back, I'm happy. Can't bear unmade beds - not OCD, just the way my mother taught me smile

Maggiemaybe Tue 02-May-17 08:28:44

Yes to what nina and others say. The duvet folded well back to air, never pulled up. But I must straighten the bottom sheet and plump and turn the pillows - DH just throws the duvet back, so I have to tidy it all if he's last up.

When we got home after living in Germany, I used to hang the duvet out of the window to air as all my neighbours did out there. Till I started to feel like the neighbourhood eccentric....

Maranta Tue 02-May-17 08:22:19

I don't make the bed either shock. We all have our little ways and preferences -we all have our routines. It's not necessarily OCD.

Riverwalk Tue 02-May-17 08:10:55

Like Nina I fold the duvet right back and let it air, after giving it a shake, plump up & tidy the pillows then later in the day pull the duvet straight. Plain, neat & tidy, no excess pillows and cushions. I have rhinitis so keep soft furnishings to a minimum - would never have a 4-poster with huge swathes of dusty fabric hanging all over the place!

I'm shock at those who don't make the bed every day - not even a little tidying and straightening? hmm

Christinefrance Tue 02-May-17 07:57:41

Paddyann if you can't function until the bed is made your way then you may have a problem as Anniebach says.
OCD is another of those medical terms used indiscriminately but which is a real problem to sufferers.
My bed making is much the same as that of Merlotgran smile

DanniRae Tue 02-May-17 07:54:54

We are exactly like you nina - and most days it stays like that until I go to bed! As I have said on here before that I could never make the bed straight away, it has to be aired.

grannypiper Tue 02-May-17 07:50:46

The bed has to be military perfect in my house but then again i even line the Kiwi fruit up with exactly the same mm difference between them ! and dont start me on the fridge magnets.

thatbags Tue 02-May-17 07:35:29

Yes, Annie's question hits the spot and probably gives you your answer, Paddyann.

Grannyknot Tue 02-May-17 07:17:56

hilda I've been thinking of filling some outdoor floor cushions with buckwheat but have no experience of it. What's it like please? Does it rustle? Thanks in advance! smile

Jalima1108 Mon 01-May-17 23:21:27

I throw it right back to 'air' and sometimes air the duvet over the banisters.
The pillows have to be bashed around a bit then put neatly at the top, right side up, open ends on the outside, the duvet just pulled up halfway over the pillows.
That's it, no fuss, no bother, just neat and tidy.

No cushions.
