Gordon Bennett. It was a lighthearted remark about traditions being important. You two should really take a long hard look at your attitude.

Easter Eggs
(245 Posts)Just heard that Cadbury chocolate factory are dropping the Easter from Easter Eggs. Obviously so that they can sell them to other religions.
IMO this is not right. Easter is a Christian celebration, and this is a Christian country. We celebrate Lent, Easter, Whit Sunday and Christmas as we have always done.
I for one will not be buying Cadbury eggs (now made in America) anymore. This is all about Greed!
I can't believe this thread is still going!! As a Christian (not a so-called Christian) I don't care what you call the chocolate eggs on sale at this time of year - you can call them chocolate bunny butt nuggets for all I care. What is important to me is the celebration of the resurrection of Christ, which I will be doing in church. Chocolate eggs have been sold at Easter, as a money making exercise by chocolate manufacturers, for a very long time and so most people call them Easter Eggs - no-one is forced to call them that. This is something which has been blown up at of all proportion - not even the DM is talking about it any more!
Maggiemaybe I'm one who does appreciate your sense of humour
Used to be we knew the kind of threads where lurked the humourless and over-intense but now they're invading everywhere.
Run for the hills
Jalima, you don't seem to understand what is being said. I am sure that the children at the school will enjoy their Easter Bonnet parade but that is nothing to do with Christianity. I imagine all children, whatever their faith will be allowed to join in.
My argument is that people who say they may insist on the word Easter being used in connection with an egg - or else they take offence and take to the press - are just wrong in the power they believe they have over both none Christians (the majority), the English language, and the direction which we are moving in. They are trying to bully people into using a word, in a particular place, where those paying for the advert did not choose to.
I really don't know how to get through the density of misplaced moral outrage other than by saying, again NO ONE IS STOPING YOU USING THE WORD EASTER but equally I defend the right of those not wishing to use it to do whatever they want too.
Sunseeker, you have just made my point except for "no-one is forced to call them that" as that is exactly what some people, including some on here, aided by the Archbishop of York and the Primeminister who chose to go into print about it, have tried to do.
I would call it logic and the defence of democracy Anya but I will not reply in kind by describing those who think they can dictate to others because they call themselves Christian.
Note to self : Politics and Easter egg threads - avoid !!
Now I'm off to have an early hot cross bun.....
Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition!
maggie ( they haven't been on GN then have they, or they would be expecting them.)
Lurking round every corner, roses
. A hot cross bun sounds just the thing to set one up for a hard day of defending democracy, NanaandGrampy, but I'm not sure about that design on the top....
N&G perhaps it would be more use keeping away from threads where people do not seem to understand the meaning of the religion they call their own but treat that religion as if they belong to a club that makes them superior in some way and therefore able to dictate the wording of an advert. I don't think this would just apply to the 'Easter' word.
I do hope those of you spend Good Friday in possibly fasting and prayer, in repentance, meditation and reflection on the agony and suffering of Christ on the cross and celebrate your belief in his rising from the dead on Easter Sunday have a Happy Easter.
We like Kathe Wolfahrt Easter, the GC and GGC love, it's all good.
The Archbishop of York said removing the word Easter from Cadbury eggs was "tantamount to spitting on the grave" of John Cadbury. When asked about it Theresa May said she thought it was a "ridiculous decision". Jeremy Corbyn has said "Why should they be Cadbury rather than Easter eggs". Now I may have missed something but none of them have said that chocolate eggs MUST be called Easter eggs. They have each expressed an opinion. I haven't noticed people being forced to ask for Easter eggs in shops rather than ask for chocolate eggs. Being the cynical type I wonder whether this is all a publicity stunt by Cadbury just to raise their profile at what is a profitable time for chocolate manufacturers.
I've boycotted Cadburys since Kraft took them over and made the chocolate sweet and quite unpalatable. There some lovely chocolatier companies around now. They do real chocolate.
Agreed Blinko
Actually you are wrong GGm2 .
Politically Correct;
.....conforming to a belief that some language, policies or measures that could cause offence or disadvantage to members of particular groups of society, should be eliminated.
In other words remove the "offending" word... Easter, Christmas etc. and use the more "acceptable" words spring or winter.
For the record GGm2 I am not a modern day Christian or any other kind of Christian. But I do accept that this is a Christian country and I do try to live by Christian morals.
Anyway I thought we had agreed that this was all a non-story anyway?
I think Cadbury's chocolate still appeals to children though Blinko .

NanaandGrampy
Now I wonder what the Cross on the hot CROSS bun stands for?
I wouldn't be at all surprised if someone started baking them with OOOOO's on them (just to be on the safe side)
gillybob
I am sure that children still like Cadbury's but mine will get a Thornton's bunny, like it or not - other makes are available, eg Lindt etc
Perhaps they could sell them with circles on throughout the year, ie the circle of life? instead of hot cross buns appearing just after Christmas!
A chocolate rabbit can't have too many ears, yum

I understand perfectly thanks and understand all about the early Church hijacking pagan festivals and some of the traditions.
Why do you think I don't understand? I know full well that Easter bonnets have nothing to do with early Christianity, but it's a tradition, wearing a new bonnet to church and perhaps new clothes on Easter Sunday after the sombre days of Lent.
Here's one explanation:
^Easter was once known as the "Sunday of Joy." After the Civil War, mothers and daughters who had donned the dark colors of mourning for such a long time began wearing colorful flowered hats and elaborate corsages as part of the Easter celebration. Their hats were adorned with blooming and fresh flowers. If the flowers were not blooming they would make them from paper, ribbon, feathers or sea shells.
Joy - seems to be missing from some posts
No one, especially not me, is trying to stop their parade or their bonnet wearing or relating it to the Easter holiday (for some) or a Christian celebration (for others).
I know about the tradition of new clothes at Easter - we always got a new outfit when I was a child which we wore to church on the day. What is your problem? You are just being over-emotional about nothing. No one has said anything against the parade.
You do not seem to 'understand' that this thread was about some people's objection to the word Easter NOT being used in an advert. Nothing more, nothing less.
That was in answer to Jalima's little rant.
Little rant??
Peace and Joy at Easter to all Gransnetters

Even funnier!
