Names never to return?

My dad had a cousin called Marmaduke. Usually he was referred to as Duke.

I have one DG who is Matilda and another who is Hettie (Henrietta) and one whose middle name is Elsie. We know several little Alfies, Oscars, Archies, etc. My great grandfather was called Noah, which my mum used to think very quaint, but it's really popular now. Don't think Keith or Brian will be making a comeback any time soon. Maybe in a couple of generations.

Devastated to read the post that included my name in an "old-fashioned" list Actually there never were many of us but I notice there are quite a few currently being named with the diminutive. I know we have only ever called my daughter with the diminutive of her name so it is nice that children are being named with what they will be called (until they decide differently of course ).

My closest friends' GCs are called Martha, Harriet, Amber, Charles and Arlo. I think new ones come and this generations go but may come back again. There is the larger cultural influence with people coming to this country of course and Brits living abroad.

My 18month old granddaughter is called Iris and her little friend is Elsie. My mum moved into a care home about the time they were born and amongst her new friends are an Iris and and Elsie !!

I remember Lettice Leaf, my problem was I looked like her, same hair & Glasses.

Oh yes - Arlo is very popular, we know a little Arlo. Is it Italian for Charles?

We have some absolute crackers in my family, my own included. I had a great aunt who gloried in the name Gorgon, a grandmother called Mahala (which means woman of sorrow apparently, why would you give a girl that name) and my mother was called Sophistica. Never heard of another one of those. She used to make a small fortune during the 2nd World War betting people couldn't guess her name. I hope none of those make a comeback.

I had an auntie Nellie and also know another Nelly who is really Helena.

I had an auntie Nelly too Jalima and we used to sing a rather mean and unkind song about her name Got us into endless trouble not that it stopped us

I know someone whose new baby daughter rejoices in the names Hazel Persephone Ophelia.

Imagine having to write that on every legal form there is!

It was Jalima! Did you get into trouble too? 60 years later and I can still remember it, word for word!

In her 90s my lovely Auntie Nellie suddenly announced 'I hate being called Nellie, my name is Ellen!' which it was.
So she was subsequently Aunt Ellen until we lost her at 104.

My name is also on someone's 'old fashioned list' as is one of my DDs! Not old fashioned in my opinion! When I was a child I had 3 friends whose dogs had my name; Now that was upsetting . Some of my GCs are Nell, Harriet, Maisie and Frederick. I have friends with Flossie, Martha, Violet, Arlo and Bertie. I love these names - far better than The Sharons, Traceys and Waynes of this world.

My youngest brother was very nearly named Torquil but my father put his foot down! My brothers and I all have Scottish names as do my girls, 3 of the dgc, 3 nephews and a great niece!

In the toddler session I take my GS to there are a few odd names, most of which I can't remember off hand, but there is one little girl who appears to be called Noah...

I did read the novel as a teenager because it was about my local area. I seem to recall it being a bit grim.

Haven't come across any little Thelmas, Pearls or Cynthias...

I think names go in waves, one generation laugh at the strange old fashioned names their grand parents generation had - and then their children resurrect them.

DH's father was Reginald Arthur, laughable names in our youth, names now back in fashion. I seem to remember in the 1950s, popular boys names were: Peter, John, Michael, Anthony, Brian, Colin, none much used now, but names like Henry, George, Edward and the like were unpopular. Now they are all the rage.

I am just waiting for Doreen to come back.

Our 2 year old granddaughter is called Ethel Grace quite a surprise when they told us what they were calling her but we are used to it now and she's beautiful.

DGS is Frank. My Dad was Ughtred. His sister was Gladys. Doubt they'll come back anytime soon!

I was horrified when my daughter said that they were going to call their new baby Audrey. Visions of the character in Corrie and an old woman that I used to know sprang to mind. Now 3 years later and it seems that she couldn't have been called anything else. They are expecting another baby and refuse to give me advance warning of the names that they are contemplating in case I put my foot in it again. Bless them!!

Thank you Minnie, Gwenllian was the last Princess of Wales , I am still looking for Gwlythyn , have tried breaking it up to see if it was two names joined, no luck

A neighbours daughter has just named her new daughter Piper. Has anyone else heard of this name?
