Names never to return?

When I was little, we lived next door to an elderly lady called Hepsibar Haddow. I've not heard that name again since. Anyone else heard of it?

My family tree has several Hephzibahs - all daughters of brothers & born within 3 years of each other! Confusion reigns!!

I had a supervisor at work years ago called Gertie, presumably short for Gertrude, and equally awful, but shortened to Trudy it`s lovely.
When I started at grammar school, I told my mother who my new music teacher was, my mother said she`d been at school with her, that her first name was Lettice, and that she was nicknamed Lettuce leaf at school. The teacher wasn`t very pleased when I asked her about it at school!

What a lovely thread. My name is Sheila, not a name in use anymore. If I hear of any other I know that they were probably born in the 50's.
My eldest daughter has given her daughter's Welsh first names, Seren, Carys and Efa, but they have very English second names, Elizabeth, Charlotte and Isabella. My eldest granddaughter is Amelia Grace.

My husband's grandaughter born last year has been named Ada! I flinch eveytime I hear it.. as Ada Larkin springs to mind, (I'm sure some of you will remember The Larkins, starring Peggy Mount as Ada). The thing is my husband's daughter wasn't born until the 1980's herself, so wouldn't have even thought about the name Ada in the same context as we do. It's just trendy at the moment to use these old fashioned names, just as it was trendy a few years ago to call a child Whitney, Britney etc.

Anniebach, my youngest granddaughter is a Lottie [short for Charlotte]. She is 6 and since her birth we have heard the name quite a few times. A new baby in our village has been named Nora. I don't think my DH's name has made a reappearance - Alan!

What about Cecil or Claude?

My mother was known as Letty, her name was Letitia and there are plenty of those around.
A new baby girl born at my workplace was named Pearson (poor bairn)

I have just googled Gwenllian and she was a Welsh princess, only daughter of Llywelyn ap Gruffudd. She lived from June 1282 - 7 June 1337
I had an aunt who lived in Treorchy and she was also Gwenllian although she was generally known as Gwen.
There are a couple of Gwlythyn names listed but no origin of the name.

I have just had news of a new-born great nephew named Ronnie-Ray! I think that's rather cute

Tiago is the Spanish/Portuguese version of James. Hence Santiago - St James.
When I was working and recording babies names, my polite response on occasions was "And how are you spelling that?"

My brother was called Cornelius after my grandfather; my name is Breda and my granddaughter is Hepzebah!

My mums name was Minnie Selina Beatrice but everyone called her Cis! Oh how I hated the name Minnie growing up and was absolutely devastated when my DD wanted to call my DGD that name. Luckily DGD is now Georgia- phew! I must say I did express my views at the time and even now (DGD is 11) my DD still says she wishes she had called her Minnie ??!

My hairdresser has called her little boy Ronnie Vincent. Can't get Ronnie Vinnie out of my mind for some reason. Has anyone heard of a Percy or Percival recently?

My dad chose my name after driving everyone mad by turning down all the names anyone suggested. The name he chose is Estelle, but funnily enough I can never remember him calling me that, I was always Dinah. I didn't ever find out why.

My mother's name was Ads and I never thought that would come. My name is June and I hope that doesn't come back haha

Until recently in Portugal near every girl was Marie ........ and the boys Jose and Joao. You were only allowed to register your child with approved names even if you were not Portuguese.

My elder DGD (she's 5 in 11 days) has a girl in her class called London.

I think biblical names were very popular in the 1800s.

My mother was called after her mother Alice and a great aunt Winnifred, so Alice Winnifred. She hated the name Alice, so always preferred to be called Winnifred. Any other Winnifreds out there?

Having recently joined my local WI I was introduced to a lady named Serafina ?I think that is how it is spelt or is it with a ph?
