Names never to return?

My MIL was very cross when we named DD2 and I was new in Germany and wondered of we had made a mistake. Now she has 2 friends nearby and all called the same. You never can tell with a name.
I have heard that Helmut and Arthur are favoured by polish parents.
I can't see Jean coming back, its been overtaken by Jane.

I see that names like Ronnie and Reggie are very popular! My name is Kathleen don't see many babies called that today!

I guess you might see Kathleen in NI or Eire though?

By the way, did you know that King Herod's wife was called Doris? Doesn't sound quite right does it!

As for Gertrude ... I knew a very glamorous Swedish woman with this name, pronounced something like 'Jhatrude' but she preferred the French 'Jhertroo'. Sounds much better than hard Gertrude!

Agatha ... I know an Italian woman by this name and again it seems so much more glamorous and exotic when applied to her!

Shortened names seem very popular these days - Lily not Lilian, Rosie, Evie, Connie, Harry, Alfie etc.

My mum's friends were Hilda ,Marjorie, and Beatrice. Their husbands were Ernest and Edwin and Stanley.

DD is at university in Sweden and many of her friends and classmates have names that would be considered outdated in the UK:

My Grandchilden are called Stanley and Ivy. I love the old names. A friend of mine is awaiting her new arrival and the choice of names, not yet knowing if she is having a boy or girl, are Edith or Albert.

My grandfather was Edgar Adolphus! Can't see that becoming popular.

Also had a Beryl, Hilda, Mabel in the family names. But prettiest name I still think was great auntie Mahala.

I remember in my class at school we had Carol, Janet, Maureen, Pauline, Marion, Alan and Graham. All popular names at the time but I don't know of any young children with these names

My grandmother was Elvira, my mum had a friend called Queenie and you don't hear Sandra or Shirley very often now (dates those with the name normally to the 40's) or Tobias (though Toby still seems to be in use !) Someone here in France tried to christen their baby Nutella and it was refused by the registrar ...but in even the previous 40 or 50 years here a lot of girls names started with Marie ...Marie Clair, we have a Marie France and neighbours Marie Lise Marie Aline Marie Yvette and next door is Marie Annick ...we also have an Anne-Marie ! I have a friend who is a school teacher here and she says they only call the roll by the child's second name as it gets confusing when everyone called Marie shouts out ! Not so popular now though
