Very rude to ask for an'upgrade' of money, I would be furious. However, this is one of the social changes that many of us are in a dilemma about. Most couples are already living together when they marry and don't need ironing boards or kettles. We want to give a gift and money is genuinely needed as weddings are so costly (even modest ones) but deciding on an amount is a minefield. A friend of DS1 put a very amusingly worded bit on the invitation on the lines of 'we have plenty of toast racks already but if you wish to give a gift a fiver would get us to a caravan in Skegness for the weekend'. Any mention of money seems crass but I would want to stop people giving things I already had.
