Do you do this? I ALWAYS grill things with the oven door ajar but two of my friends watched me do this the other night and looked at me like I was mad! So...door closed or open?!

Canon gas cooker; double oven; grill in top oven; instructions say leave door open

I imagine the risk of closing the door is that there is a (very) slight risk that the food may catch alight, or (in my case) one might forget it's there!

I have a Rangemaster too. Mine has a separate grill, with instructions to leave the door open. As well as a multi-functional oven with a different fan grill setting. This one says to grill with the door closed.

My grill won't function with the door closed. Sometimes I close it, out of habit, because it's also the small oven. Always disappointed to find nothing has been grilled!

Mine has to have it closed, I don't like it so I never grill.

My present oven & previous one are/were fan so door has to be closed. As for handles for grill pan I never use them even if they are supplied I much prefer good oven gloves or mitts much safer.

Mine, a gas grill, turns off if you shut the door.

My grill MUST have the door open when in use, even states this on the cooker.

My (crap) Zanussi says grill with door open, but I always shut it as otherwise the smoke alarm (in next room!) goes off - and nothing is burning!!(honest!)

Always open

I disagree that without a handle is safer! Mine have all had eye level grills with a permanent handle attached -no problem at all! When i have tried to grill at DiLs house aNd had to stoop with smoke in my eyes and use an oven glove I've found it very difficult. I wonder why built in high ovens with eye level grills (so much easier) seem to have been phased out? My DiLs have to bend down to look in the oven as did my mother! How is this progress?
