Breaking some rules

I'd really like to be one of those people who doesn't give a gnat's f*rt about rules (but in a modest way, no murder for example) but I can't even go against my local supermarket traffic signs (many do and it annoys the heck out of me). So, any suggestions on how to be a bit of a devil and cross the line now and again? Or is there anything you'd like to do if only you had the nerve???

Maggiemaybe Tue 05-Apr-16 08:16:01

But why, thatbags? Surely the person next in line would just pick it up and put it the right way round and think you're a bit of a prat? And round here they'd probably tell you so.

pompa Tue 05-Apr-16 08:21:29

Why ??? Because you can, go on be a devil Thatbags smile

grannylyn Me too in the carpark in our little town there are arrows as to which way to go to get round but if I want to head out of town instead of home I do sneak out the quicker way depending on how how near I am to the end of the row.

There is a local privately owned 5p toll bridge at Swinford. It didn't used to be manned on Christmas Day, so my father would enjoy driving across it a few times just because he could! He was a great stickler for following rules, so this was the naughtiest he got! Nowadays there is a charity collection.

When I was a child I stole a loose hazelnut from the counter display in Marks and Spencer. I felt so guilty I couldn't eat it, and haven't forgotten or forgiven myself to this day! blush

It used to be right ear ring if gay, like Elton John, but I don't think anyone follows it now.

Wanting a tattoo, or an earring, in later life purely for the sake of rebelling against some unwritten, and probably imagined, rule, smacks, to me personally, of immaturity.

Most rules are there for a good reason. Perhaps best not to break them.

Occasionally, as on this website, there are some ridiculous ones that simply cry out to be fucking broken.

shysal Tue 05-Apr-16 09:07:34

Are you admitting to being immature Jingl? Once in a while is fun surely! grin

Elegran Tue 05-Apr-16 09:13:49

I did the supermarket divider thing a few times after it had been mentioned on here previously. I think a lot of us on here and on Mumsnet did it, to see what would happen.

Most people following me just turned it round, some tutting as they did so. One poster said that the girl on the checkout asked whether there was a trend on Facebook, because it seemed to be happening a lot. The power of memes!

Let's all revive that one - Mumsnet are probably bored with it, but you never know.
It could be a sign for the Secret Society of GNers.

For the amusement of people doing exactly what you say they'd do, maggiemaybe! Innocent fun. There was a hilarious thread on Mumsnet about it. I can't remember details but I got the feeling it was about just being ornery (in a totally non-aggressive way) to get rid of some inhibitions and to make one feel better by being silly.

We used to call it having a silly outburst. Good for the soul grin

Elegran Tue 05-Apr-16 09:15:52

I tried searching for that thread, but it must have fallen off the bottom of the list.

There is a car park in our local town which has a lovely view in one direction, and faces a supermarket in the other.
People often have a quick bite of lunch, sitting in their cars there, and it amazes me how many of them choose to park facing the supermarket, not the view. confused
(I ignore that rule grin)

BBbevan Tue 05-Apr-16 09:34:02

I think I am more subversive than rebellious

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 05-Apr-16 09:37:09

Shysal confused I have no intention of getting a tattoo or an earring. I dislike pain for one thing.

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 05-Apr-16 09:40:08

Bags it wouldn't work. It wouldn't divide the shopping. That's not exactly a rule, is it?

Elegran Tue 05-Apr-16 09:55:22

It is a convention, Jings, an unwritten rule. It makes people tut - I though you were all for that?

It does divide the shopping, because it still creates a space about a foot acros between the previous customer's stuff and yours. Putting the first things out of the trolley sideways across the conveyer belt just behind the divider stops the loose things roilling forward intoi the other person's shopping. You could always do belt and braces - start with one divider lengthways then use another sideways. That would make you unpopular, but what the hell?

Willow500 Tue 05-Apr-16 10:13:57

Not really sure I'm a rebellious type although I never bother with supermarket car park signs grin I once thought of myself as growing old disgracefully and not conforming to the norm of old(er) age but in reality I probably do. I had a tattoo done years ago not to be rebellious but because I wanted one and still prefer heavy metal and rock music to pop.

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 05-Apr-16 10:41:43

Correction!!! I will aim at the young women.

Nonnie Tue 05-Apr-16 10:53:39

Nothing wrong with a bit of immaturity surely?

I wouldn't break any actual rules but conventions are sitting targets. DH says I am unpredictable and I am very happy about that, like to keep surprising him.

The reason I love my red high heels is because my father wouldn't let me wear red shoes because he said only prostitutes wear them. I buy what I like to wear and don't care whether it is age appropriate, if I like me in it who cares? Doubt if anyone is looking at me anyway.

My oldest friend and I are looking for something special to do for our significant birthdays this summer, current favourite is ziplining in North Wales followed by the underground trampolining in caves. Anyone got any more unconventional ideas?

I have no intention of leaving this world being thought of as conventional.

pompa Tue 05-Apr-16 12:12:23

Wasn't the saying "Red shoes, no knickers"

Greyduster Tue 05-Apr-16 12:50:09

I thought it was "red hat, no drawers"!

pensionpat Tue 05-Apr-16 18:50:24

Or fur coat, no knickers
