Mollie, obeying rules is a sign of a considerate and thoughtful person. I am sure you wouldn't just conform for the sake of it, for example, obey a rule that harmed others.
My OH and I are both eldest children and are stereotypical 'eldests':- responsible, rule-abiding, and as socially aware as we can be. We put our bins out (and, moreover, collect them in again and hide them), tidy the garden and cut our verge grass, obey the speed limit, are polite to others, we ensured our children were good at school and so on.
I believe that everyone should have as much freedom as they can as long as others are not harmed or discomfited but this sets limits on our behaviour. These limits are rational and considerate. We do not live in a vacuum but in a society where others have rights too. I think that this is often forgotten in our current, narcissistic, YOLO world.
