A bit cheeky of me to start this, but hope it is allowed!
Good morning Kitcheners!
DH seems to be perking up (typical!) which is good and is planning on getting up properly, shower and dressed.
Now I can moan that I have nonetheless cancelled a day trip I was booked on tomorrow to the Arts and Crafts museum in Chipping Campden and then to Rodmarton Manor with my art history class. Can't leave him for a long day without any means of getting back at short notice, heigh Ho, c'est la vie!

jollyg Tue 22-Mar-16 11:30:50

Aha the dreaded monbretia, its now renamed as, according to gardeners world, crocosmia, Its a pest, or as in Soops parlance a pestilation. You can add ation to any word that bothers you.

Stupidly I planted some tarragon in the midst of the pest, asked hmself to pull up the roots, and the tarragon went to heaven.

Its a lovely herb.

Galen Tue 22-Mar-16 12:08:43

Well, would you believe it? The old man next door who dropped down dead suddenly when out cycling ( age 75) has had his postmortem. No definite cause of death found. He aleays swore he was kept alive by his cycling otherwise he would have died years ago!
It would appear that he died 'in perfect health'
He always was awkward.
I suppose I'll miss the old curmudgeon

Alea Tue 22-Mar-16 12:20:06

Oh "perfect health" can be a right bugger can't it?
My father always insisted hospitals were dangerous places as "people die there" and as for your bed? I expect more people die in bed than anywhere else.
I assume his heart just stopped?

Galen Tue 22-Mar-16 12:25:22

Presume so, but why? They've sent samples off for histology but this takes 8/52. I've dissuaded them from having an open coffin. 4/52 after death and a pm it would not have been a good idea.
Even so she's having the coffin home for an hour on Tuesday night so we can all visit and say goodbye? Champagne is being provided by his wealthy brother.
I won't be at the funeral as I'm sitting in Cheltenham on Wednesday afternoon.

Gagagran Tue 22-Mar-16 13:11:55

DH is nearly 74 and a keen cyclist - out at least twice a week and does 50-70 miles each time. I know that he would much prefer to go like your old curmudgeon Galen, doing something he loves and far preferable to a lingering demise bedbound.

jollyg Tue 22-Mar-16 13:15:42

Surely he popped off when he was at his happiest on his bike?

Which way would you want to go? Me? cant think of a better way than your 'old git'.

Sadly I gave up cycling years ago, but remember when I took my bike to China and joined the masses of cyclists there.

Now it full of exhaust smog.

soop Tue 22-Mar-16 13:37:13

Late good morning greetings from a chilly-ish Kintyre.

The care home visit was one of mixed blessings. M is convinced that her elderly sister, also resident (and seated just two chairs away from her) has been giving M "a hard time". shock Hard to believe, as sister really is a delightful and placid person. Our dear neighbour, B, was staring into space throughout my visit. We held hands for a while and he whispered that he misses Anne, his wife, who died about a year ago. The Saltire beside the gatepost, is looking rather sad. I doubt that he'll ever return to live in his home.

Lona The lemon drizzle cake is a treat. I shall partake of a hearty dainty slice as I slurp sip my coffee. wink

number the stairlift photos, with Mia in control, made MacS chuckle.
Cats do have a liking for selecting interesting places to settle down. Rory has a choice of a giant feathered cushion (perched on the end of the back of the sofa) or on his tartan rug on his chaise, lolled on *MacS's lap, or in the bottom of the wardrobe should the door be ajar.
Well done regarding your cabin upgrade. I'm chuffed for you. You deserve a proper treat.

Charleyg Please let us know how your hospital appointment goes. Fruit and a delicious turnover. Just what the doctor ordered. flowers

jollyg A pestilation of crocosmia...trips easily off the tongue. If only it were that easy to remove the dratted stuff. The root system travels unerringly throughout our garden.

Enjoy preparations for the Easter egg hunt. NanaandGrampy It is of the utmost importance to grandchildren that "fair play" is adhered to.

Galen You make me chortle. 'Old curmudgeon'...at least he departed this life in style. No mouldering away in a hospital bed for him. Champagne! hmm Sorry that you won't be partaking of a glass or two. When I die, I wouldn't mind doing so after a spin on my exercise bike. No time or need for panic. A wee dram all round, together with a hearty rendition of 'Westering Home.'

Alea Even MacS appears to be relieved that he gave in to my demands genteel persuasion. He was concerned. I knew that he was concerned. The cough isn't as vicious and the blue inhaler helps to curb his breathlessness. It was awful to hear him gasping after an attack. His mother died after a chest infection resulted in a fatal asthmatic attack when he was just fourteen years of age. She was in her early forties.

I'm away to do some easier work in the garden. Rain forecast for tomorrow. The heavy slog will have been well worth all the scratches, bruises and stink of TCP. Also...it has lifted my spirits. wink

Charleygirl Tue 22-Mar-16 15:52:11

soop if MacSporran will not listen to you, might he listen to us lot?

I could not believe it, I was seen on time, by the consultant and had bloods taken, all within 30 minutes. I have hyperthyroidism and will know when the blood results come back what the treatment is. The only symptom I have is I can be grizzly very easily and for little reason. I have been told that I will now be a patient there for life. That will put the NHS out of joint as one is only supposed to have 1 or 2 appointments unless one is diabetic, broken a bone, has cancer and a few others.

annsixty Tue 22-Mar-16 16:14:19

Oh dear Charleygirl another thing to worry about. You really are trying to win the Gold medal for keeping the NHS in work. Mind you I am running you a close second as are one or two of us on GN. Keep up the good work I say.

soop Tue 22-Mar-16 17:48:24

Charleyg I would never put you into the grizzly category. You always seem so cheerful with us lot. The appointment went well. Being seen promptly and having bloods taken all within 30 minutes is a rare occurrence. I'm sorry that you now have an additional health problem to live with and manage. Thank you for updating us. flowers

Talking of hospital appointments. I received one notification from the Queen Elizabeth hospital on Friday last. It advised me to contact the Co-ordinator to give dates on which I shall be unavailable to go into hospital 'for a procedure' between now and 2nd June. I therefore phoned on Monday to give dates. As I was speaking to the Co-ordinator, MacSporran handed me another letter, stating that I'm on the Day Surgery list at the New Victoria Hospital for an unspecified procedure. Would I please contact...the same person on the other end of the phone. hmm I presume that I'm to be given a light anaesthetic so that someone who "knows his arse from his elbow" can rootle around my posterior passage. If the hernia can be fixed, he will make a further appointment for me to undergo the same surgery that was carried out some time ago and wasn't 100% successful. Hey ho! As bags would say.

I went into the garden fully intending to do some gentle hoeing. Fat chance. I went into the wet garden, where the Gunnera thrive. It was squelchy underfoot. The Marsh Marigolds love such conditions. I began pruning the Gunnera ( cutting off the massive seed heads with shears.) Many went over the fence into the forest. They are very heavy things to handle. I then took photos of a couple to show you. You get some idea of scale when you take into account that they were as long as the wheelbarrow.

I must away to scrub my filthy finger nails. Lightweight gardening gloves are a false economy.

Good night to you all. I shall return in the morning. moon

Alea Tue 22-Mar-16 19:53:04

Gosh, this might be seen as a bit of a backhanded compliment, but this is really the only thread I feel comfortable reading or contributing to!
Keep well everybody, you are very precious to me smile

Crafting Tue 22-Mar-16 21:30:26

I agree Alea the kitchen is a very special place for all of us.

Phew! I was really worried that I had missed a delicious slice of Lona's lemon drizzle. Just managed to have a slice before Soop scoffed the lot tidied it away grin

Soop sorry you're going for another op. Hope whatever they do will be more successful this time (actually I think it's probably more important that he knows YOUR arse from your elbow, if you see what I mean) grin

oldgoat Tue 22-Mar-16 22:16:29

Heartily agree with you alea and crafting, soop's kitchen does feel like a safe place to hide from the angry girls on some other threads. I love looking at the photos on the kitchen wall and reading your kind and supportive messages to each other.
OH and I are off to the wilds of Teesdale where I probably won't have internet access so here's wishing you all a Happy Easter, a few days early.

Charleygirl Tue 22-Mar-16 22:22:24

I am certain that I have a season ticket for my local hospital, orthopaedic, vascular, endocrinology and the next is to be cardiac OPD. At another hospital I am on the list for a knee replacement. Not to mention my appointment at the Macular clinic later in the year, my GP appointment next month, the hygienist next week and a visit to the dentist soon also. I also have to return for another test related to the latest diagnosis- cannot wait. I do not need to see an optician until next year. If Tara is lucky, I will be able to fit her trip to the vet for her annual jabs on my way to Waitrose.

Gardening? I may be able to fit that in between appointments.

soop so sorry to hear that you are having more surgery. MacSporran must be worried.

This getting old lark is a total buggeration. Why was I not allowed to retire when I was 29, was fit and healthy enough to get around and do what I wanted?

Alea Tue 22-Mar-16 22:50:32

All I can add is [tongue in cheek ] emoticon, no wonder the NHS is going down the pan!! I am surprised there are any resources left. I tease DH that the only department he does not have on his list is Obstetrics/Gynaecology and I dare say he'd add that if he could;
Hepatology, Cardiology, Gastro-Enterology, Haematology, Oncology (well that was a few years back) Orthopaedics, Rheumatology,Orthotics, Physiotherapy and whatever -ology he goes to for his asthma/bronchiestasis(sp?)
Any more ologies and Maureen Lipman's Beatty character (BT) would be impressed.

Main thing is all of you lot get treated for whatever needs treating, and for the country's sake ???????????? keep healthy!

Galen Tue 22-Mar-16 23:04:42

I swore that before he died, the only department my dh had had not visited was obs and gynaecology. ( that's apart from visiting me)

Galen Tue 22-Mar-16 23:06:15

Alea wot no urology visits?

NanaandGrampy Wed 23-Mar-16 09:08:54

I have a cold !!!!!!!

I may not make it smile

I need to read all your posts so I know that actually it's a COLD and I'm lucky that's all that's wrong with me because I am the WORST patient in the world and I hate colds more than anything !!

With some of you here having far worse health than me it reminds me that actually I should just suck it up . So please feel free to tell me to do so!!

I'd like to echo the previous comments about this place. You can stuff lively 'debate' as its deemed on other threads, I'll trade that for kindness, compassion and humour that's here in abundance.

Now, pass the tissues please and I think I would feel much better if I had cake !!!

pompa Wed 23-Mar-16 09:11:27

Don't worry, I am keeping the urology depts busy.

Alea Wed 23-Mar-16 09:32:55

Don't tempt fate Galen (Urology)
Imagine the queues if there was a "Cold" department!!

Specially for you nanaandgrampy cupcakecupcakecupcake

Galen Wed 23-Mar-16 10:15:27

grinpompa you can't hog it to yourself.
Did you know that urology deals with erectile dysfunction?

Charleygirl Wed 23-Mar-16 10:17:13

At least I am well past the Obs but not necessarily gynae but at present I have no time to take on any more medical problems, maybe later when things calm down.

I also hate colds and try to steer clear of anybody with a slight sniffle. We all feel sorry for ourselves when we do have a cold but men I think are worse.

I quite agree re some of the other threads, downright rude. We are each entitled to our own political views and I do not like mine belittled so I do not join in. As previously mentioned I did think that mentioning one's 3 favourite meals was fairly innocuous, not a bit of it.

Having spent yesterday travelling to and from OPD in glorious sunshine, today the washing machine is on and it is cloudy outside.

I am renaming Tara moaning Minnie- she does not give me a chance to open the door for her yet she knows the routine every morning.

My cleaner comes today for the second time- she has a voice resembling a fog horn. My sight may be going but my hearing is acute. I am trying to stay clear of cakes etc. although I am aware that those in soop's kitchen are calorie free. I may have a look.

whitewave Wed 23-Mar-16 10:17:45

The man who died on his bike - Geoff Hamilton did as well. I used to like old Geoff.

Charleygirl Wed 23-Mar-16 10:19:53

I am losing touch, I did not realise that Geoff Hamilton had died!

Galen Wed 23-Mar-16 10:37:05

I think most cleaners are the same. Kate has no volume control either. She explains it by saying all her other customers are deaf! ( they also all have senile dementia, BUT I DONT{yet})
