I have never felt this was one of my sister's strong points, so when she recently expressed regret in an email about something I had told her, I sort of bit her head off reacted in a disappointed way. It turned out she was talking about other things that have happened to us over the year, but didn't say so.
I felt awful, as it was kindly meant, if clumsily expressed and have of course apologised and tried to smooth her ruffled feathers.
But I wonder how often we hold back from saying anything in case we say the wrong thing? When we send a not of condolence or a card, how hard it can be to judge what is the "right" thing to say?
Is a clumsy compliment or expression of sympathy better than saying nothing, or do you feel if you can't get it right, it is best to say nothing?
