I have to write this down

Our lovely son was taken into hospital on Friday - he was bleeding both ends. He was absolutely terrified! He refused point blank to go in the ambulance, and the staff where he lives were trying to persuade him. One of them telephoned me in the hope I could help, but when I arrived he was in a terrible state, and past reasoning with. His blood pressure was on the floor and there was a very real likely hood that he would die. It was impossible to give him a sedative because his heart rate was fluctuating. Everything was done to try to get him into the ambulance, his social worker was called, and in the end the police, because be is a vulnerable person who was being difficult and needed special care. In the end they managed to get him out of the house, then eventually on to the trolley where they had to strap him down and then hand-cuff him. I am devastated that my beautiful happy son had to be treated like this, but I know it was necessary, and to be quite honest, the policemen and social worker were visibly upset. I keep seeing Robert lying on that trolley struggling against the straps and getting more and more upset. My husband is trying to be sensible about it, but is equally upset, fortunately I have a great daughter and son-in-law, and the staff who care for Robert treat us like their family - they too were really totally at a loss as to what to do. The staff at the hospital were beyond reproach, Robert had finally settled when he got there, but was still being difficult. Yesterday he was very sedated, they are keeping him that way for the moment, he is just frightened by all that is happening. I know I should not think like this, but I keep seeing our lovely son, who would not hurt a fly, being treated like a criminal with the hand cuffs and strapping, and although I know that it was for the best, I cannot help but feel that he feels like that too. Oh!, I am so upset that this happened to him, and now there is nothing I can do but sit beside him and hold his hand. I thought I would feel better writing it all down, but the tears are streaming down my face, and I really do not want my other half to see this, as it upsets him even more. I realise our son might die, but I hate what has happened, and that he might die hating us all for the way he has been treated.

Printmiss, you must be exhausted and traumatised. I hope someone is looking after you too. x x x x

I have a huge lump in my throat reading your post.

How very traumatizing for you Printmiss to witness your dear son being strapped-down and handcuffed flowers

Try not to think of him being treated like a criminal rather that they had to resort to such measures to ensure he got to hospital. I hope that Robert is responding to treatment and on the mend.

It sounds perverse but I was heartened to read that the social workers and police were visibly upset at the situation ...... it shows the basic humanity and kindness of these two often-maligned professions.

How distressing for you all. I hope your son recovers well. flowers

Hopefully it will all just be a blur for your son. It sounds as though there was so much going on at the time that it would have been impossible to take it all in. How reassuring to learn of the reaction of the police and SWs. flowers

Please let us all know how he (and you) are getting on.

TwiceAsNice Sun 19-Jul-15 14:59:25

So sorry to hear this. Your son should not remember due to the sedation and when he wakes up again properly you will be there to reassure him. As regards you remembering what happened try to consciously change the memory when it comes to mind with a lovely memory you have of being with your son practising swapping does begin to help I promise it is a well known therapy technique for trauma memory. I'm sending you best wishes and hope all will be well soon, do take care.

Oh Printmiss, how awful for you.
Every single word that you have ever written about your son shows how much you love him. He knows this in his heart and deep inside him. That is what he will remember not the stressful time when he was ill.
I hope he makes a good recovery and am thinking of you all. flowers

Jomarie Sun 19-Jul-15 15:33:23

Oh my goodness Printmiss how really awful for you all. Don't know what to say apart from take care - my heart goes out to you and your family. flowers

Gagagran Sun 19-Jul-15 15:48:30

Just caught up with this Printmiss - how traumatic for you all. I hope you are feeling a little less stressed today and that your DS is improving. He must have been terrified and however much you knew he had to go to hospital, seeing him manhandled like that must have been be heart-breaking for you and your DH.

I hope it helps a bit knowing that so many GNs are thinking of you and I am truly hoping that today is a better day for you all. flowerssunshine

PRINTMISS I hope Robert is feeling better today flowers

Printmiss, I've only just logged on and read your thread. You are with your son, and holding his hand. As he drifts in and out of his sedation, all he'll feel is your hand and your love.
What an absolutely terrifying time you've all had. We're all thinking of you and sending you a warm arm around your shoulders. xx

merlotgran Sun 19-Jul-15 16:12:09

I hope writing it all down has helped, printmiss. I had a similar situation with my father when I arrived home to find the ambulance men (as they were called in those days) trying to get him in a straight jacket. He was suffering from an aggressive brain tumor and needed urgent treatment. He was so scared he wouldn't agree to go with them. Fortunately, he calmed down when he saw me but it was a heartbreaking experience I'll never forget.

I hope things are improving today and you are not feeling so distraught.
