The Big Toast Challenge

(72 Posts)

Can you do it?

Place bread in toaster, switch on, stand with face slightly over toast to watch progress. And then - the hard bit - DO NOT JUMP OUT OF YOUR SKIN WHEN IT POPS UP AT YOU.

This Challenge is harder than it sounds. Safety requirements should be adhered to at all times. ie, do not set hair/scarf/eyebrows, etc on fire. The innovator of this Challenge accepts no responsibility for anything at all.

Damn! I've run out of bread angry

rosequartz Sun 10-May-15 10:17:47

My crumpets just did not pop up - had to scrabble around in the toaster with a pair of wooden tongs - does that count?

rosequartz Sun 10-May-15 10:19:10

Thank you for a sensible thread (the rest are all a bit, well you know hmm)

loopylou Sun 10-May-15 10:19:11

Neither did my toast hmm
Cinderised around the edges....

Falconbird Sun 10-May-15 10:24:58

I love toast and have it every morning with marmalade. Must admit I have to keep an eye on it. Once two slices of bread caught fire. shock

On a serious note, I went on a Health and Safety Course when I was a volunteer in an OAP Home and the chap doing the talk said that toasters were a main cause of house fires and should never be left unattended. shock

Did anyone see the compilation of clips of video of cats getting a fright every time toast pops up out of a toaster? It was on "You've been Framed". Some of the cats got such a fright that they fell straight off the work surface or jumped up vertically. I wonder if anyone will be filming the Grans trying this? I think there's £200 per clip used. We all have our pensions to think of...........................

Small slices of bread are a greater challenge. They don't pop up far enough to get hold of, unless you stand over the toaster and catch them in midflight. Turning the toaster upside down to shake them out covers the place in toast crumbs, many of them burnt to cinders (must empty the crumb tray more often)

rosequartz Sun 10-May-15 10:58:46

Bamboo tongs are useful for fishing out small bits of toast, crumpets, scotch pancakes etc
I got fed up of pressing the button time and again trying to catch them

rosesarered Sun 10-May-15 11:12:46

Rose, where can these bamboo tongs be bought, I need some immediately if not sooner, sounds great.I will not be attempting this challenge, nor should anyone with a dicky ticker! no matter how many times we shake out and clean the toaster, we just can't get rid of all the detritus, we make too much toast and should really buy a new toaster every year as the solution.

pompa Sun 10-May-15 11:19:21

I left it for ages, just went up in flames, pop up ??? Not sure my grill does that.

Ana Sun 10-May-15 11:21:25

I've got these ones

www.amazon.co.uk/Lakeland-Magnetic-Wooden-Toast-Tongs/dp/B00I9TNXBM

Must admit I don't often wait for the toast to pop up, I have to change its position during the operation otherwise it's not evenly done!

annodomini Sun 10-May-15 11:21:53

Toaster tongs easily found on Ebay, roses. They are also useful for fishing teabags out of mugs.

annodomini Sun 10-May-15 11:24:33

I was amazed when my toaster - one with a very strong spring - popped my toast very neatly on the plate beside it on the worktop. Try as I might, I could never get it to repeat this feat. grin

ninathenana Sun 10-May-15 11:29:32

Are we brave or stupid in our house hmm ?

We put ours in the toaster, and walk away shock DH and I are odd in that we both eat our toast cold.

rosesarered Sun 10-May-15 11:35:04

Thanks peeps, I shall now buy some tongs.Nina, I am the same as you, can't bear hot toast, it has to be left on the plate to go cold and then buttered otherwise I can't eat it.Mr Roses enjoys hot buttered toast though I once read that the optimum pleasure (!) re toast, is that it is left for a min or two so that when you butter, some melts and some doesn't.

Ana Sun 10-May-15 11:41:09

Yes, that's exactly how I like it roses but you have to get the timing exactly right!

loopylou Sun 10-May-15 11:47:20

Not odd ninathenana I hate soggy toast too!

rosequartz Sun 10-May-15 11:47:28

I can't remember where I bought mine roses, but it was probably TK Maxx (but you can't rely on them being in stock)
Thanks for the link Ana

MIL used to use a grill at home but when she came to stay she would pop up the toast to see how it was doing then put it back in. We regularly smelt burning when she came to stay!

Agus Sun 10-May-15 11:50:22

DH likes the, too hot to handle buttered version. I'm with roses and Ana yum.

Galen Sun 10-May-15 12:05:19

Wouldn't be without my wooden magnetic tongs! ( Amazon)

Falconbird Sun 10-May-15 12:07:52

My Dil has put the toaster away and the grandchildren say she doesn't want to use it because it makes too many crumbs.

Problem - making toast is something my grandchildren and I love to do when I babysit.

Should I mention the toaster and the possibility of getting it out when I babysit.

My Dil is VERY tricky believe me.

jinglbellsfrocks Sun 10-May-15 12:35:00

Why have you all got crap toasters - or even none at all!? (*pomps*) hmm Look. Like mine. twenty quid, lovely toast and a Google pop (without chucking toast halfway round kitchen)!

And you can enjoy simple pleasures, such as this one.

jinglbellsfrocks Sun 10-May-15 12:35:53

Good pop. NOT a "Google" one. hmm

pompa Sun 10-May-15 12:49:34

JBF, keep your comments about our toasters to your self, it was very spiteful, my grill is now sulking. Any more of that and we will all aim our toasters in your direction and you will be buried under amazing toast. Hope you have plenty of butter and marmalade ready.grin
