My daughter has just called from New Zealand with news that my granddaughter was born two hours ago at 27 weeks gestation. She weighs just under a kilo and is now in NICU. I'm shaking with shock and frustration - she's so far away and all I want to do is get on a plane and go and hug my baby.
I'm on my way to Manchester as my mum goes into hospital for her cancer op today so I'm staying overnight at my sister's. The household is asleep and I've rarely missed my husband more than I do right now - he's in Newcastle and both his phones go straight to voicemail. sad

I'm very grateful for all your support and would love to be able to share some positive news, but so far the little one is still very poorly. I've heard lots of accounts of other people's experience of very premature babies and it seems as if our little one is following a typical pattern of small steps forwards and several steps back. It's just so hard when other babies are improving and going home and my granddaughter still seems to be having daily setbacks. Today baby had two episodes of turning blue after she choked and stopped breathing - and even as a trained nurse my daughter finds this terrifying.

Thank goodness for breathing monitors, ga. The feeling of panic and fear when this happens is something no parent can take in their stride. A friend of my DD has a baby at home who remains on the monitor and oxygen and the parents have become proficient at resuscitation, although it is needed less lately. I hope your little one gets through this quickly. Living with the extreme stress of these experiences is so hard on you all. More love and best wishes to you and yours flowers

Extract from latest email from my daughter:

'I hope to believe that baby has been slightly better this evening, after further scary choking episodes this morning I was ready to give up attempting to breastfeed, but was persuaded to keep going. She had her last spontaneous event at 0530 and nothing since so far, so hopefully that is the new medication making a difference.'

I'm celebrating every little advance and hoping that this time baby's improvement will be sustained.

Now, if only I can get my mother sorted. Aaargh!! [#witsend]

A glimmer of hope, ga. It's so good of you to keep us up to date when you are so involved with your mother's situation too. Very much a 'sandwich generation' issue. Thinking of you all. x

Anya Sun 24-May-15 13:46:53

Yes, tiny step in the right direction is a lovely way of putting it sunshine

Iam64 Sun 24-May-15 13:55:53

so much love, prayers and positive thoughts being sent to your grand daughter, and her family flowers

merlotgran Sun 24-May-15 14:11:06

Glad you've had some better news, ga.

whenim64 Sun 24-May-15 14:50:00

Thanks for the update ga. The more days she gets under her belt, the more likely she'll grow out of the choking episodes which should become few and far between as her breathing and swallowing reflexes mature and the infection goes. A little bit of progresss is such good news.

Soutra Sun 24-May-15 15:37:31

Every day your little granddaughter gets through is one more day closer to her "true birthday" and her little system will be growing stronger and more mature all the time. Every good wish to her family in NZ and to you , torn as you must be between the generations.
How is your mother doing?
