My daughter has just called from New Zealand with news that my granddaughter was born two hours ago at 27 weeks gestation. She weighs just under a kilo and is now in NICU. I'm shaking with shock and frustration - she's so far away and all I want to do is get on a plane and go and hug my baby.
I'm on my way to Manchester as my mum goes into hospital for her cancer op today so I'm staying overnight at my sister's. The household is asleep and I've rarely missed my husband more than I do right now - he's in Newcastle and both his phones go straight to voicemail. sad

Oh GA what a stressful time for you and your family. I have only just picked up this thread and see that it has been a very difficult road for your little DGD. I do so hope her condition stabilises soon. flowers

Sorry to hear about this latest setback, ga. You must all be feeling so helpless, but take heart that these wonderful units can swerve to deal with crises in a matter of moments and your little grandaughter's care has brought her so far since her birth. One of our little grandaughters was back on the C-PAP just a week before being discharged at her gestational age of 39 weeks, when she got another infection, started wheezing and needed help to feed again. (Crying uses up so much energy and it's back on tube feeding to conserve as much as possible). Very disconcerting to learn the anxious parents were being trained in resuscitation at home. The panic subsided when her treatment took effect and we breathed yet another sigh of cautious relief. My daughter was seeing other preemie babies still being tube-fed and on oxygen weeks after discharge, when they were going to their frequent hospital appointments.

I hope the next news you hear is much more positive.

I hope you have some good news soon. It must be dreadful for you being so far away and feeling so hopeless, but we are all thinking of you flowers

I can add very little except to send very possible vibe to you, your DD and her little one. I can feel for you and am willing this little girl to grow and strengthen so that she can come home to her loving family.
I know everybody is different, but my god daughter's little sister was born at 28 weeks weighing under 2lb, less than a bag of sugar! She is now a strapping (and I do mean strapping ) young woman, very intelligent and feisty.
Nature never ceases to amaze me with its miracles flowers

when, the prospect of little one going home on oxygen and still being tube-fed fills my daughter with dread. Your comment about a 'sigh of cautious relief' really resonates with me - I seem to be inhabiting a world of trepidation when every triumph is tempered by the possibility of further problems. How old were your preemie grandchildren before you really - I don't quite know how to put this - were able to take their continued good health for granted? (IYSWIM)

ga there's a world of difference when preemie babies go home and are with their family, as being in the hands of nursing staff and waiting for permission to do anything with them doesn't do anything to relieve the anxiety, no matter how wonderful the hospital care. Both our little grandaughters went home over the Christmas period - one on Christmas Eve and the other the day after Boxing Day, a week before they were actually due. They had so many meds and vitamin drops, feeding charts to complete, diaries to keep, but the busyness of looking after them distracted us from worrying - all of a sudden, it felt like our family had babies who were feeding, sleeping and crying like all the others and the anxiety was much less. Busy, because they had frequent clinic and hospital appointments, but away from the prem unit it was very different. Each time they gained a bit more weight, and reached 'normal' size for new babies, it felt better. 6lbs and fitting into newborn sizes was something to celebrate! smile They were on vitamin drops and various meds for a few months but stayed well and both are now tall, healthy 3 year olds.

What an anxious time for you, ga. I'm sorry I can't add anything other than to just echo the good wishes that have already been posted.

I hope you have better news tomorrow.

Ana Wed 20-May-15 22:37:47

Yes, as the grandmother of two very premature twin girls I feel for you, ga, and sincerely hope the outcome for your DD's little one is as good as theirs has been.

Fingers crossed - she does sound like a little fighter! smile

Little one is in real difficulties with her breathing and heart rate. She's awaiting yet another blood transfusion and probably will have to go on to oxygen; more caffeine, more lines in, more blood tests - she's had an X-ray.........I'm heartbroken for any poor mother (and father) who has to go through this awfulness of having a very premature baby and watching them struggle to keep a hold on life. sad

Mamie Thu 21-May-15 06:20:01

Thinking of you and hoping for the best GA. So hard for you to be at such a distance from them.

ffinnochio Thu 21-May-15 07:05:56

ga Very sorry to hear of such a worrying time for you and your DD. flowers

kittylester Thu 21-May-15 07:18:29

ga, I've just caught up with this thread and send lots of love and (((hugs))) to you all! Hoping you hear better news today. flowers

whenim64 Thu 21-May-15 07:42:13

ga if only wishing and hoping could make her better. It sounds like they are doing their utmost to help her and all that technology and intensive care has brought her this far to strengthen her chances of surviving her early birth. (((Hugs))) seem trite in the circumstances but are sent with sincere hope that there's a dramatic improvement today.

Oldgreymare Thu 21-May-15 08:23:11

Also just catching up GA so sending lots of good wishes, such a worrying time seems like an understatement. Hoping you hear better news very very soon.

grannyactivist Thu 21-May-15 19:11:40

Baby continues to be very poorly today and her condition has been made worse by a junior nurse making a dreadful mistake. sad

Mishap Thu 21-May-15 19:21:24

Oh dear - that is so very hard; things were already difficult. How very hard it must be for you to be so far away. Sending healing thoughts and hoping things will improve soon.

Soutra Thu 21-May-15 19:30:37

Oh ga my heart was in my mouth, but hanging on in there with you, praying for the little girl, her mum and all the family x

whenim64 Thu 21-May-15 19:39:43

OH ga that's just what you don't need at this critical time. Your little grandaughter has so many people urging her on and hoping for her speedy return to health. Life can be unbelievably tough, can't it? Hanging on for some good news - surely it must change for the better soon flowers

moomin Thu 21-May-15 19:58:33

ga so sorry to hear of this latest setback, my heart is in my mouth reading your posts. How awful for you being on the other side of the world. I do hope the health of your little DGD improves soon. Sending good wishes and love flowers

Tegan Thu 21-May-15 20:18:57

Same here ga. Lets hope that all of our thoughts are chanelling their way to little one and her parents and giving them strength. And you are hurting for all of them. Stay strong flowers.
