My daughter has just called from New Zealand with news that my granddaughter was born two hours ago at 27 weeks gestation. She weighs just under a kilo and is now in NICU. I'm shaking with shock and frustration - she's so far away and all I want to do is get on a plane and go and hug my baby.
I'm on my way to Manchester as my mum goes into hospital for her cancer op today so I'm staying overnight at my sister's. The household is asleep and I've rarely missed my husband more than I do right now - he's in Newcastle and both his phones go straight to voicemail. sad

Sounds much more hopeful grannya, amazing strength for a tiny baby. flowers

Good to hear of a step forward, albeit a small one. Your experiences of the little one's setbacks is so reminiscent of my first granddaughter's start in life. (She is now a bright, lively and sporty eleven-year-old.) Thinking of you and your family in New Zealand and hoping you have more good news very soon.

I've just had the most amazing facetime call from my daughter who is AT HOME with baby!!!!
Daughter has been 'rooming in' at the hospital for the last three days to do day and night feeds in preparation for taking the little one home, but didn't dare mention it in case anything went wrong again. Baby was weighed this morning and hadn't lost weight and her brady/desats have improved. She still has a monitor and a naso-gastric tube in and will have daily visits for the next month, but unbelievably she's home. I am so excited - her most recent blood transfusion has left her quite pink and she looks really healthy.
Those of you who have been there will understand when I say that for the first time she looked like a 'proper' baby, lying in her mother's arms after a feed with a look of contentment on her little face and making the occasional gurgling sound. So, so lovely - I can't stop grinning. grin grin
