Is it too early to put the t.v. on?
(82 Posts)When I first retired I made it a rule not to put the t.v on until the evening. Now is goes on late afternoon but for some reason I look at the clock to make sure it is not 'too early' before I switch on. Do others set these silly rules for themselves.
I have read it and I don't think its clever or funny to use such words even abbreviated. If you cant think of some other words to use then you cant be very bright.
I'm still working, but don't start until 11 a.m. I don't have the tv on. I don't even put the radio on until I get in the car to go to work.
I certainly don't do any housework!
I think the internet has certainly made a difference to the way I start my day - the first thing I do when I come downstairs is turn the PC on...
"all paragons of virtue such as GNetters are busy doing housework. lol, then boasting how virtuous they are. "
Where are all these posters boasting about having done all their housework and being proud not to watch TV in the daytime (or not watch it at all) ? You do seem to see gransnetters through very jaundiced eyes, ethel.
No. You are quite right. It's not clever or funny to use rude words, even abbreviated.
Depends on one's sense of humour, I suppose...
Or sense of decorum...
More tea, vicar?
I've read back over the posts and you are the only one using the word "pride" ethel
Some said it was on all day.
Several people said they did not watch until the evening
Some said there was not much on that they fancied
Some recorded things to watch later
Some watch things that they want to watch, whenever they are on.
More or less what you said you did. I still don't know where you read any pride into it. People do what they want to do.
ethebags says "Anyway can anyone tell me what else there is to do at 9am on a morning if you live alone and don't go to work till lunchtime, apart from reading or TV. Love to hear ideas."
For a start, anyone who is at a loss for something to do and bored and dissatisfied with their life shouldn't stay in the house all morning sulking about it unless they are physically unable to get around or suffering from agoraphobia. That leads to bad temper and envy of people with more exciting lives.
If you have a bus pass, use it.
Every town has a library. Use it or lose it.
Every town has parks. It is free to walk in the park. There are other people in the park, with dogs and children. Smile at them and say hello, not many of them are axe murderers.
Go to a department store or supermarket cafe and buy a cup of tea or coffee.
Take a bus ride out into the country, get off at a cafe for a cuppa, and ride back again.
Visit a museum or art gallery.
If the weather is too vile to go out, do something creative indoors.
Learn a new skill.
Google something that you heard of but don't know much about.
Join a local authority interest class.
Phone a friend.
Define 'cant'
Elegran 'Google something that you heard of but don't know much about' PRICELESS
Tried googling FFS
Elegran, Im not old enough for a bus pass.
I do use the local library.
I don't live near enough to a park.
Why have a coffee in a shop when I can have one in my own home and save money.
No time to visit museums etc or country walks.
Love to learn a new skill or go to classes but there are no classes where I live or are on when Im at work.
All my friends are at work in the morning.
Added to that im working from home so have to be by the computer and phone to get stuff for later.
I might even have to do housework (heaven forbid).
Have you always been a negative person Ethel or is it just as you have got older?
I think my guilt about "putting the t.v. on too early" stems from my inner headmistress. She nags away telling me that housework HAS to be done in the morning, Ironing HAS to be done on the same day as the washing and probably loads of other things I do for no logical reason.

Set your phone to record messages, ethelbags and get the hell out of the house when you can. You can answer your mobile phone on the bus. or check them over your land line when you get home. You don't work in the morning so don't work in the morning
There are a million things to look up on Google, most of which will not horrify you.
You can learn new things from the internet and still be available to answer the phone or email. You can enroll in a course to do at home, with all materials sent to you or shown on the screen.
You can learn practical skills from books if you have the ability to understand what you read.
Local authority classes are on in the mornings, afternoons, evenings, weekends. You don't work 16 hours a day seven days a week.
Your two biggest challenges are not to regard the whole wide world as a conspiracy to do you down, so that you can start taking advantage of the opportunities out there, and to avoid envying others. Envy eats away at the soul and makes a person resentful and unlovable.
Is your health bad? Is your brain failing? Do you have to spend your spare time looking after parents, siblings, children, grandchildren? Do you have too little money to buy essentials? No? Many people on Gransnet would envy you.
Or are you "just winding us up" again, as you have on other occasions when you felt bored?
I don't thtink Im negative, I enjoy lots of things in life and see beauty and love in many everyday things its just that many everyday things get in the way such as people attitudes. Its so ridiculous to be even thinking that we should put on the tv at certain times/or not.
Sorry little FLO if you have that sort of compulsion you need help. What logical train of thought says you 'must' do housework at a certain time.
I can understand those with large families, then yes certain things must be done at certain times such as washing dishes in the morning so you have clean ones at night. Apart from that living alone there is no one to dictate when anything must be done. As for ironing why not do it when you need the items that have been washed. Life is for living not soul destroying grunge jobs.
ELEGRAN Im not winding anyone up, I don't do that now. I respect most of you and Im grateful for the many bits of advice and support Ive received over the last year or so.
You are quite correct in saying that envy is bad, I get quite down to think Im late 50s and have not done lots of things I want to do, probably never get to do them now.
Im really angry that the retirement age has been raised to 66, I was so hoping to be able to do things before I got too old.
To get back to my earlier post I regard watching TV or reading in the morning as 'me time', that time helps me set up for the day as I usually fall asleep as soon as I get in at night. I know many will scorn me for this.
I am 75, ethelbags and there are still things I want to do, but as the average life expectancy of a woman in this country is 82.8 I still have at about ten years to do them in. You have no bus pass, so you must have many more years than me! Don't give up on your life!
(and according to this site www.uwic.ac.uk/shss/dom/newweb/lifestyle/age_expectancy2.htm I should live until I am 88)
If your pessimism persists, go and see your GP. A short course of something could perk you up a bit (many on this forum have found that a help)
No guilt for me - I'm just so very happy to watch TV morning noon and night. However I do have another life outside of TV which I am living living living

a dose of a bit more income is all that I need, to be able to afford a holiday, go on a course, go for coffees every week with my friend. No probs. Thank you Elegran.
A pity that is not on prescription. But there are cheap holidays if you look for them. Many courses are free - take a look. And real friends will drink a cup of instant at your kitchen table.
You are right Ethelbags1 there is no logical reason for things I do. I don't know if I am nuts because I do do them or sane because I can recognise that I might be nuts.
Sorry about the do do and for posting the previous observation twice
I don't think littleflo needs help! I used to run my house with the same kind of rules, and tbh life and the house were better for it. It is only in recent years I have started ignoring my "inner headmistress", and I'm not at all sure it's a good thing.
