Is it too early to put the t.v. on?

When I first retired I made it a rule not to put the t.v on until the evening. Now is goes on late afternoon but for some reason I look at the clock to make sure it is not 'too early' before I switch on. Do others set these silly rules for themselves.

No rules, I do though think I spend too much time on Facebook. I switch the TV on when I want to watch a programme, doesn't matter what time of day it is. Just do it grin

We only have one TV and it's in the sitting room. I never have it on during the day (except perhaps at Christmas or occasionally to watch the racing, but that really is once in a blue moon). I (and Mr P when he's here) are usually in the kitchen/dining room during the day, and I always have Radio 4 on. I don't go through to the sitting room until around 7.30pm.

DH has to have TV on all the time and spends most of the time ignoring it and doing something else or flicking from channel to channel never watching anything through.
I am so glad of the new technology so I can tune the TV in to a radio station which keeps him happy for a while. I have already used a TV guide app to plan what I want to see and set the recorder. I then watch what I want when I want, no ads, no flicking, no dross, no boredom and no missing a favourite programme because of life getting in the way.
I have been known to catch up on several episodes in the morning if there's nothing else to do and to watch iPlayer on the laptop (with earphones) while he watches back to back Time Team!!

I only put the TV on when I want to watch a certain programme, no matter the time, otherwise it stays silent in the corner.

I often have the telly on with the sound off throughout the day and turn the sound up if I spot something interesting but it annoys me when the S.O. walks in and automatically turns it on if it's switched off. I do switch between tv programmes and Radio 6 a lot of the time. Pooter goes on a soon as I wake up. I fall asleep watching BBC4 most nights and often wake up throughout the night and watch bits of programmes before nodding off again.

I feel guilty if I sit in an easy chair, read or watch TV during the day. Nobody gave me that rule, it's just the way I feel. Thank goodness my inner boss allows me to come onto GN as often as I please, as long as I am sitting on a hard chair at the table!

henetha Thu 04-Sept-14 17:26:23

Same here., Used to feel guilty if I had the TV on during the day. Finally relented last winter, - miserable, rainy, floods etc, so now allow myself
to put it on in the afternoons if I want. Still can't watch it in the morning though. The guilt would kill all the enjoyment!

Marelli Thu 04-Sept-14 17:37:23

Like shysal, I feel guilty if I sit in an easy chair and read/knit or watch tv during the morning. However, this self-imposed rule doesn't seem to apply to Facebook or Gransnet!
I think it's my mum's fault, because she never 'sat down' ("Oh, I've never sat down all day!") until the afternoon, when she'd then curl up on her chair and have what she used to call her '5 minutes'. That was her nap. grin

I have occasionally watched a Midsommer Murder on a winter's afternoon but usually the TV is off all day. OH is at work so it's nice and peaceful. I am trying to wean myself off my iPad though. I love this site and a couple of others but I spend far too much time on the iPad. I used to read a lot, would like to get back to it.

There is so much snobbery about TV - you watch it when you want to! It is your life - enjoy what you enjoy and be proud of it!

I have several friends with no TV at all and they think they are superior - I do not agree - they are missing out on entertainment and learning.

suzied Thu 04-Sept-14 18:06:51

My rule is no wine until 6 pm just poured one!

rosesarered Thu 04-Sept-14 18:11:27

Mishap is right, there is a sort of snobbery regarding tv, what you watch and also what time you watch.Throw caution to the winds and watch what you want when you want. We deserve it! Women feel guilty about everything.

suzied Thu 04-Sept-14 18:16:50

I don't watch TV till 6 as well!(unless it's raining!)

Sometimes the daytime programmes are more interesting and informative than the evening ones. Like Marelli I believe it all goes back to parental conditioning. My mother whom I admired very much was very happy to sit down with an interesting book or chat to friends in the mornings. In later life she enjoyed TV in the mornings especially if sport was involved Housework can wait, she said. She never had a routine but it all got done in the end.

I tend to wake up at between 3am and 4am and the tv goes on straight away, I toddle into the kitchen to make tea or coffee and then plonk down to watch something I've recorded or I might even brave the news (it does tend to be slightly better at that hour). Not a lot else you can do at that time without waking the neighbours up!

kittylester Thu 04-Sept-14 18:22:12

We put the kitchen and bedroom TVs on at 6 am. I usually remember to turn the bedroom one off as I leave the room or I can go upstairs to get changed/put washing away etc and end up watching Bargain Hunt or some such for ages. I turn the kitchen one off as soon as Breakfast finishes and listen to Radio 2 or 5Live. If something has happened that warrants having the lunchtime news on then we would put it on while we have lunch. It quite often will stay on then. blush

I always watch Pointless and whatever is on in the afternoon if I'm ironing!

tiggypiro Thu 04-Sept-14 18:28:17

Another evenings only here too. The only time it goes on during the day is either during the winter when the weather is too bad for even me to go out or when I am laid up. The Beijing Olympics were wonderful to watch when my leg was attached to a machine for 6 weeks after I broke it.
Have to admit watching the whole day when Le Tour started in Yorkshire.

annodomini Thu 04-Sept-14 18:43:44

I have lunch with Bargain Hunt and when the repeats of the Pallisers were on, I either watched in the afternoon or recorded them if I couldn't.

tcherry Thu 04-Sept-14 18:44:24

Well said Mishap!!

tcherry Thu 04-Sept-14 18:48:32

I like to watch--Who Do You Think You Are.. Never The Twain..and Long Lost Family..

And I love Comedy, it is a very powerful thing to help change your mood for the better.

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 04-Sept-14 18:59:58

Is it snobbery? Or just not wanting the box to take over the day?

tiggypiro Thu 04-Sept-14 19:04:00

Not snobbery jingl. I just know that if it goes on I shall just sit and look at it and I reckon I do enough of that during the evening

J52 Thu 04-Sept-14 19:04:58

Since retiring, I find that I still wake up early but am not compelled to get up! I now watch catch up on the I Player. Such luxury! X

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 04-Sept-14 19:07:55

I wasn't suggesting it is snobbery. Just referring to previous posts.
