Hi I have never done this before but I really don't know what to do. My DD sent me a card yesterday (Valentines) saying they are moving, I was so shocked I thought it was a joke, I soon realised it wasn't. I have shared the two most beautiful grandchildren's lives since the first hours they were born and see them nearly every day I cannot imagine my life without them and only being able to see them once or twice a year. I can not think rationally at the moment and just keep crying I have been up since 3.30 this morning and found this site to see what other GP do in this situation. Why is it that my love for these two is so powerful? I wont be there for all their special times my GS is 2 and GD just 7, we have always done special things like Halloween parties with cousins and friends, garden parties, camping in the garden etc now I wont be a part of that, my DH and I both work just to survive no holidays etc so getting money together to visit is not going to be easy. I can't say how much pain I feel it is beyond what I ever thought imaginable. DD is hoping for a new life and yes I want that but why do I have to be brave I have all the time while bringing up my DD and DS watching them grow, make mistakes, etc I was hoping in my old age life changing things would be a thing of the past I just want to curl up in a ball and wake to find it is a dream.x

And I do not think that parents realise how much we grandparents love our GC - it is different from the love we had for our children when they were small, but just as intense. Your DD may not realise quite what this will mean to you at the beginning.

I do think that everyone on here is right - you will adapt and you will begin a new relationship with the little ones, that will be rewarding in its own way. You will be the treat they look forward to when you are able to visit, and you will treasure every moment with them - even those where the contact is over the ether.

My dear friends thank you so much for all your thoughts and everyone is united in the same thing that time will help. I am a positive person and with my DD suffering with depression there have been many times when I didn't think I could find something to be positive about, but I always did, so I will this time. She has asked me to move with her but I have said not in the near future, I have my DS and my stepdaughter too, my other GS and GD and my sister and family and friends, my job and my lovely house. In my older age thinking 10 years from now, I am 60 this year, I will need that network of loved ones around me. My DD also has this network around her so of course when she moves she will not, but this is her choice and I will not make her feel guilty I will support, be positive and be there as I always have in the past. I have been on the net looking for ideas and ways of keeping my husband and I connected with our beautiful GC and have seen some lovely things to do, so in good old fashioned Mums way I will start the process asap to take my focus away from the upset. Bless you all and I now feel your pain too. xx

I expect someone has already said this, but you have been in my thoughts a lot and this has been nudging away in the background so I will say it anyway. I think your DD by choosing to share her news on a Valentine card was also telling you how much she loves you, which is rather lovely. Please keep the card because it is rather special flowers

You have a very positive attitude fuzzy and will survive this. I know how you feel as my DD went to NZ and I thought I'd never see my GS1 grow up. I had many a cry and missed them so much, but they came back. Its my GS2 I will never ever see again. Who knows what the future holds?
Stay with us.

I saw my DD and tried to say how I feel without pushing any guilt her way. I had my two GC yesterday afternoon which was as always fun and exciting as we could get out into the garden and their little cousin came and played too...this of course makes your heart break to watch them all playing and laughing together, which in the future wont happen so much. I have stopped crying at last but feel they are there behind my eyes and could pour out at any minute. I have work today so will have to put on a brave face as I work with young children and they, as my DD and GC can't see my pain. I do have concerns about her dealing with the move, changes and her depression but I have to let her go and see for herself I am not going anywhere and will be here to welcome them back whether be for a visit or forever. I love them and love conquers all...xxx

It never ceases to amaze me how much I love my three 'littles'! I always knew that I would be very fond of them, but actually I literally love them ALL to bits. Which one would I try to rescue if they were drowning, well, all three of them, and probably drown us everyone in the attempt!!! so I do feel extremely sorry for you fuzzyfeltnan, and don't really know what to say to make you feel better, except as someone else suggested, could you not move too to be closer to wherever it is they are going? I say this because we lived 150 miles away from our DGC, and as they got older we saw less and less of them, till in the end, two years ago, we 'up sticked' and moved to be closer and are now 45 miles away, and the difference has been amazing. We now see them at least twice a month instead of three or four times a year, the two younger ones (11 and 7) come to stay, and the eldest (14)who now begins to have a 'busy' life(!!) comes with DD to drop off and pick up. It's the best move we've ever made, well worth all the hassle and commotion moving entails. Might be worth a thought.

Two of my grandsons live in Luxembourg and I see them about 6 times a year. They come to see me and I go and visit them. Not ideal but as they were born out there, it's not quite the same as them moving away from the UK.
