I saw this tonight. A good film with Russell Crowe excellent as Herman Goring. I knew nothing of the psychiatrist, Douglas Kelley, sent to assess the mental states of the Nazis awaiting trial.
Kelley’s conclusion was that given the right circumstances, people were capable of behaving as these Nazis on trial had done. My dad said the same to me when I was learning about the holocaust.
A tough watch but scarily reminiscent of today in many ways. At one point Goring describes the first time he heard Hitler speak, when he promised to return Germany to its former glory. Wouldn’t you follow a man like that, promising to return your country to its former strength and pride?
