I know we’ve touched on this before, but until researched a tad more I wasn’t fully aware of quite how powerful the USA military are within NATO and indeed the Western World.

For example;
• Leadership Roles:
The top military commander of NATO—the Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR)—is permanently reserved for a U.S. four-star general, ensuring American leadership over allied operational planning.
• Logistical Backbone: U.S. bases in Europe provide critical airlift, sealift, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) networks that most European militaries cannot match independently.

I understand part of Trump’s attitude towards us all now, which at the same time scares me slightly!

Yes, we have spoken about it before on this forum.

Yes, the US is huge.
Though when the subject came up several months ago, many seemed to disbelieve.

What do you mean when you say “yes, the US is huge”

I’m not talking about the country, or their actual military power, but purely about their powerful and guaranteed force within NATO?

All of that.
Every which way you can think of.

The current POTUS is correct in one thing, other NATO members need to up their game, spend more on defence and forward looking security.

It didn’t happen by accident.
They’ve been working on this supremacy for decades.

It’s checks and balances. Yes the position of Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR), has always been occupied by an American, but the civilian position of Secretary General of NATO is always occupied by a European. Other tactical command positions within NATO are usually occupied on a rotational basis by top ranking generals from European military. Thus far, this has worked very well. As of 2026, the current commander of Joint Force Command Norfolk Virginia is a Brit - General Nick Perry. The first time a British General has ever held this position. I think that’s very positive. In 2024 a British General was appointed Commander of the NATO Joint Force Command (formerly AFCENT) in the Netherlands. It’s good to see we still have ‘skin in the game’!

Under every other American president, NATO has worked fantastically well and it will continue to do so if we don’t let the shenanigans of the current incumbent of the Oval Office cast a pall over it all.

The reality is that the US has been reducing its commitment to NATO for many years, it's not just Trump. When he's gone the crazy talk will end the reduction won't, the US wants Europe to pay for its own defence, it isnt popular but that is what is happening now.

I guess that’s fair, however don’t America pay the most because they have, by a very long way, the biggest population?
