Have you emptied your mattresses everybody?

I am sure most of you know but I didn't know until today the old £5 note will not be accepted by shops , cafés etc.etc. from 5th May.

I'm probably mentioning this for nothing blush

Actually, POGS I didn't know until I saw a notice on a bus this morning! Must have a look in GS's money boxes and take them to the bank. They should carry on changing them after 5th May I would have thought. Sad; I hate the plastic ones.

Ana Wed 26-Apr-17 18:53:56

I haven't had an old one for ages, but surely the banks would change them for you even after 6th May?

Ana Wed 26-Apr-17 18:54:26

(sorry, 5th May)

Jalima1108 Wed 26-Apr-17 19:07:35

I don't think I have any tucked away but I will check all pockets and purses!!

Thanks POGS, if I find a bunch of fivers I will treat all of GN to cupcake or wine [or both]

I have found some francs in the drawer
and some markka

I've got an old 10 bob note that I've been hanging on to for decades. It's such a lovely looking note; really looks as though it's worth something, unlike the new fiver that looks like an escapee from a Monopoly set.

Oh! A ten bob note, smile I used to get one of those for my birthday ( such riches!)
When one of my Grandma's died, a whole load of white fivers were found in her wardrobe, by that time not legal tender, even the banks didn't want them.
I must ferret about in all my handbags to check on any old fivers and pound coins.

Chewbacca Wed 26-Apr-17 20:21:46

Felt like you had thousands when you had a ten bob note, didn't you!

Maggiemaybe Wed 26-Apr-17 21:01:26

I've just had a rummage and found a stash of zlotys. A good excuse to book another little city break, I think! smile

Chewbacca Wed 26-Apr-17 21:02:58

Zlotys? Are they Polish currency Maggie?

Jalima1108 Wed 26-Apr-17 21:06:13

Are they still using the zloty or euros now Maggie?

you could bring back some Cadbury's chocolate

Maggiemaybe Wed 26-Apr-17 21:08:06

They are. We've been to Krakow and Gdansk and loved them both. Looks as if Warsaw might be on the cards!

Maggiemaybe Wed 26-Apr-17 21:09:26

I've just checked, Jamila. Still the zloty - phew!

Jalima1108 Wed 26-Apr-17 21:25:37

Plenty to spend on chocolate then!

Ana

Yes you would have to go a bank , building society and I think the Post Office.

I told my friend today and she said she had some stuffed in a pillow in her airing cupboard in case she need cash.

ninathenana Wed 26-Apr-17 22:41:47

Yes, the banks will exchange the old fivers after the 5th. I read this this morning.

ninathenana Wed 26-Apr-17 22:42:52

I only keep £50s under my mattress
wink

ninathenana Wed 26-Apr-17 22:44:19

Sorry POGS for some reason that didn't post straight away.

The story of the Princess and the pea comes to mind!

I haven't had one of those tatty old things for ages, loving the new polymer notes, roll on £10 in the same material. However, I see trouble ahead with the new £1 coins as far as compatability with shopping trollies. It will all become clear in due course no doubt.

TerriBull Thu 27-Apr-17 09:54:24

I wish I still had a ten bob note, they fell out of birthday cards, or if I was really lucky a £1 note. Couldn't wait to spend mine, sweets and comics if I remember rightly smile it would be lovely to see one again, weren't they red? and £1 notes green, it's all a dim and distant memory. My weekly pocket money at junior school was a half crown, I loved those too.

Chewbacca Thu 27-Apr-17 18:04:49

Ten bob notes were light brown Terri. Smaller than the one pound note, which was green. The fiver was blue. Oh the half crown! You could buy loads and loads of Black Jacks with a half crown. No wonder I've got a mouthful of fillings!

J52 Thu 27-Apr-17 18:32:47

Our Waitrose already has trollies which take the new pound coins.

Thanks to you I went and had a look in the safe and I found some old fivers which I spent this morning. I was warned in one shop to make sure I spent them before the 5th.
