Thanks for the reminder, I didn't think I had any, but in reading this post a alarm bell went off in my head, and sure enough, I had a fiver stashed away in the back of my 'holiday' purse, for emergencies! As good an excuse as any to go to the shops tomorrow!

Shame though, as I must admit I definitely prefer the paper notes rather than the toy town ones that they're bringing in.

I really like the new pound coin there's plenty about here but I hate the stiff five pound notes like having a chunk of plastic in your pocket and if they get a crease in them the machines spit them out

Sainsbury's are giving away tokens that fit their trollies to tide customers over... You just pick them up from Customer Services.
I'm more concerned about the local car parks - none of the machines take the new pound coins, so today I was scrabbling around trying to find £1.60 in change, as I'd only got three new pound coins..!!

October 15 is when the old £1 coin ceases to be legal tender.

henetha We have had a few of the new £1 coins already. Not too keen on them myself so they will get a bit of getting used to. Very light though so the purse will be less heavy with change in it. Thanks for the notice, I will check for £5 but I think I have managed to get rid of them all now.

Why don't supermarkets have tokens instead of coins when it comes to trollies? They would not have to change them then. Got to be cheaper for them.

Sadly I don't have that much of a collection! I believe that we are also supposed to be looking out for new fivers which have Jane Austen on them (a couple of them still knocking about) which are meant to be worth a fortune. Some lucky sod will no doubt to find them.

Regarding the £5 note, they said quite clearly that banks will exchange them indefinitely, so no problem.

I haven't seen a new pound coin yet round here! When are the old ones finishing? Someone told me it was May but I think they have got muddled with the £5 notes.

My mother sent me some £5 notes that she found in the back of a drawer for my birthday last year. They must have been at least 40 years old. I downloaded a form from the internet and sent them to the Bank of England and I got a £20 note the next day. I was very impressed with the efficiency.
Easier to spend them but not that difficult if you haven't. It is a very simple form.

Thanks to you I went and had a look in the safe and I found some old fivers which I spent this morning. I was warned in one shop to make sure I spent them before the 5th.

Our Waitrose already has trollies which take the new pound coins.

Ten bob notes were light brown Terri. Smaller than the one pound note, which was green. The fiver was blue. Oh the half crown! You could buy loads and loads of Black Jacks with a half crown. No wonder I've got a mouthful of fillings!

I wish I still had a ten bob note, they fell out of birthday cards, or if I was really lucky a £1 note. Couldn't wait to spend mine, sweets and comics if I remember rightly it would be lovely to see one again, weren't they red? and £1 notes green, it's all a dim and distant memory. My weekly pocket money at junior school was a half crown, I loved those too.

I haven't had one of those tatty old things for ages, loving the new polymer notes, roll on £10 in the same material. However, I see trouble ahead with the new £1 coins as far as compatability with shopping trollies. It will all become clear in due course no doubt.
