Oh I can live with that...it is winter after all, prefer hot veggies.

How was the woman going to keep the lettuces fresh?

Perhaps she was organising some sort of event involving lots of salad.

I can't see me getting into a scuffle about lettuce..

Perhaps she was going to gorge herself on lettuce just incase she never sees one again !

DH (silly man) came in from work last night with a carrier bag, announcing that he had a present for me. The bag contained a bottle of red wine and 2 courgettes. Grinning from ear to ear he handed me..... Not the wine but the 2 courgettes saying " I heard they were in short supply and thought of you when I saw them on the shelf"

they were huge and I didn't think of him when he handed them to me

I could make a killing with all those courgettes in the freezer from last year's harvest then! Broad beans aren't on ration too, are they?

I think catering establishments are buying from the supermarkets due to the shortages. Do you think we should be suspicious of supermarkets maybe exploiting this a little. No of course not.?

Iceberg is not something I would have in my salad.
I prefer rocket and large watercress
So I am willing to donate my iceberg to anyone that wants it

I have heard about courgette shortage but as yet we are still able to buy them locally

Iceberg lettuce really does not keep as well as other varieties. It is green, crispy and relatively tasteless and that is it. I always use Romaine or Cos which keep very well.
I do/did use courgettes quite a lot.
Spring greens are good at present. I do love salad my though.

I suspect that people who rarely buy or eat any salad will be rushing out to buy it now in case they cannot get it.
Unfortunately that does seem to happen. Then all those people will be dumping the salad they did not use before it went off.
Oh I am a cynic.

Iceberg rationing sounds ridiculous, but even better was the news item which made me -
broccoli rationing at Morrisons!
My digestive system really can't take broccoli, so if anybody wants my share (nudge, nudge, wink, wink) I am sure we could come to an arrangement.
Sitting in Waitrose café and happy to report no shortages or rationing in the veggie aisles ?????

Maybe the person with boxes of lettuce runs a catering business. Like Roses said, won't bother me as it is too cold for salads just now. Apparently Spain have had awful weather which will lead to shortages of whatever they grow. Will just have to adapt, be like the old days when fruit and veg. used to be 'in season". Will we cope, have to sort a veg patch in the garden.

It won't bother me; I hate salads and can't see the point of lettuce. Like cherrytree i am a big fan of watercress though. The was plenty of both broccoli and courgettes in the local market yesterday but they were more expensive than usual. So were new potatoes.

Whilst there probably is a shortage I can't help thinking the supermarkets are trying to cause "panic buying", and put up prices. I also heard on a news broadcast that frozen food suppliers have said they have plenty of stock and while I prefer fresh I think I could manage on frozen for a couple of months.

No courgettes here and I use them a lot in cooking for stirfrys. No yellow peppers either. I think you lot down south are taking them all before they get to us

I've noticed that my local Aldi (Wirral) has been very low on broccoli for some weeks now and hasn't had any courgettes at all since Christmas. I just thought it was poor timing on my part. Oh well, just have to raid the freezer again.

Oddly enough we went shopping yesterday and iceberg lettuce and courgette were on the list.

None in Aldi, none in Tesco , none in Morrison's and I paid £1.19p in Lidl where they are normally 49p but on this occasion I paid it. Didn't get a courgette!

Yes it is due to weather conditions , it happens, back to beans on toast and bread and dripping I suppose.

Did you know if you wrap your Iceberg in tin foil it will keep very well in a fridge, try it.

While I like a salad anytime of the year I can't get excited about not being able to buy a lettuce. It might make us choose something different. I don't remember salads in winter as a child so I'm not getting my knickers in a twist about it.

Oh Badenkate is this another reason for the North/South divide? They're taking all the courgettes? We need to take action, they should set up an all-party parliamentary enquiry immediately.

Saw this on the news this morning, I have just been to my local supermarket, no shortages here, maybye mainland Europe is getting them all first.
Don't like courgettes and not the season for Salad anyway.

SIL just suggested that perhaps there is a wall being built on the Channel coast from Courgettes and we will charge the English for them

Tesco won't let anyone "bulk buy" more than three Iceberg lettuces. Why would any private individual need to buy more than three lettuces? Caterers will surely be buying their veg and salad wholesale anyway, not from the supermarket.
