Some few years ago an old friend of my mothers gave us a jar of chutney for Xmas. It wasn't very nice but, so as not to cause offence to a very elderly lady, we said we had enjoyed her gift.
Fast forward five years and we're still receiving the chutney. I was cleaning out a kitchen cupboard today and last year's jar was still sitting at the back. We tried giving previous jars to various family members but they didn't want it either.
I shall of course continue to accept this gift as it is meant with great kindness. I do feel bad, however, for not eating it and perpetuating my white lie. What would/have others done when faced with unwanted/unsuitable Xmas or birthday gifts?
