For several months my colleague and I have been working with a man who has been a rough sleeper for a very long time. Earlier today we were able to move him into a little flat and he will be sleeping in a bed tonight, out of the cold and wet. He actually didn't let himself believe that he was being housed until the moment he saw the flat today - and although it looked tiny and smelly and none too clean to me, to him it was a palace. It was a very emotional moment for all three of us. It was such a cold and wet weekend I was actually worried the poor man might not survive it, but tonight I'll sleep easier in my bed knowing that he too will also be sleeping in one and not on a bench or under a tree.
Working with homeless people in a voluntary capacity might not be a glamorous job, but the amount of satisfaction we felt today is truly priceless.
