Years ago I went to a sale for a freezer and bought a lovely apricot leather jacket!

I have friends who visited a Scottish island and bought a house, hasten to add they weren't looking for one, just saw it and fell in love.

Over 30 years ago DH went out to buy a suit and came back with a hostess trolley!

Back in the summer I went to M&S for some knickers and came back with an armchair for my bedroom - well, it was in the sale and they didn't have my size in knickers.....

My father went out (many many years ago) to buy a plug and came back with a big six foot long radiogram. My mum hated it, said it was like a coffin. (It wasn't, she was just annoyed at him spending all that money )

I went to an architectural auction 10 years ago, the first auction I had been to for years, just to see what was there.

I came home with a rabbit, a hutch, a bale of hay, a 10 kilo bag of carrots, 10 caulis, 40 terracotta flowerpots, a long tin bath, 5 metal watering cans and a serious auction habit.

I am no longer allowed to attend one unless accompanied by a responsible adult.

I once took my car in for service and came away having ordered a brand new one.

I'm guilty of going out to buy teabags but came home with a new car.
DH was not amused because he thought I was incapable of choosing sensibly (he meant not just going by colour ), miserable grumpy old man.

Does anyone remember The Fast Show, and the sketch each week, where the husband comes in grinning, and the wife says " Did you manage to get
The cat litter, and the bread and milk?" Husband says...."even better than that Dear!" And then goes on to list all the items he has bought ( usually things like a parrot in a cage, a doorstop,a new kettle etc)

I think we can safely say there are quite a few impulse buyers around.

stillhere, do what we did develop a small business selling 'antiques' at antique fairs. We do three or four 2 day fairs a year, always outside stalls. We reckon taking into account trailer hire and pitch hire we just break even. Then for the rest of the year we can haunt church and village hall auction sales and buy unlikely lots with the excuse that we are going to sell them.

I would love to do that. We used to do car boot sales when the children were younger, I loved it, but sadly the general public started to expect to be able to buy anything and everything for 50p.

Years ago my late mother was not impressed when my father (then aged 65, and six foot three) went out to by petrol and came home with a tiny Fiat sports car. Into it went mother , five foot nothing in all directions and two large dogs.
