I have just written a 'funny' birthday card to a friend. On the back is written:

"Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, wine in the other; totally worn out and screaming... Woo hoooo, what a ride, I want to go round again!".

How do you intend to spend your time before you exit this world? grin

Love it grin

That's food for thought. Seriously.

Jane10 Thu 14-May-15 09:39:06

Not sure I want to go like that Marmight. I've always wondered if I'd suit going into "a decline" like Victorians. I could droop decoratively on a chaise longue entertaining visitors bringing me little gifts and notions to tempt my appetite. I could have a little dog called Flush-oh no waiting a minute that's Elizabeth Barrett Browning isnt it? Drat! could give it a go anyway.

Marmight Thu 14-May-15 09:39:35

Yes, I am still thinking ...........

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 14-May-15 09:43:29

Sometimes I can't even remember why I am weight watching all the time. Life was very nice when I used to come out of a 'down' mood by baking a cake, and eating it butter cream, icing, and all And eat biscuits. And a drop more wine in my life could well be cheering.

Perhaps fear comes into it.

I'm sorry if I'm taking a lighthearted post too heavily! shock

jing are you feeling cheesed off today?

Elegran Thu 14-May-15 10:05:33

I don't fancy going into a decline. Very boring lying around waiting, and people would soon get fed up coming to entertain me and cheer me up. I'd rather a quick exit just as I was starting to think that enough was enough.

But not too soon, please, I still have things to tidy up and finish before I go - a house full of materials and wool for a start. Besides I still have to see how my grandchildren turn out as they grow up, I wouldn't like to miss that.

Yes I have so much to find out about and enjoy. Watching Mum over the years - she is now 97 - I realize that it is important to enjoy every minute I can. Her brain is still really sharp, but her body is what has let her down so I am mindful of doing stuff while I am able, both mentally and physically.

I would love to be the person in the card! I really am under my skin but I am constantly trying to be sensible - but it is a battle.

annsixty Thu 14-May-15 10:18:22

Letter in today's DT.Exam revising daughter received a text from mum,"what do you want from life?" daughter and dad discussed, should it be success, wealth, happiness, love? A few minutes later another text arrived, sorry that should have been,"what do you want from Lidl?".

posie Thu 14-May-15 10:21:12

It's a fine line I think. A little bit of what you fancy is good, too much & it might be a very short ride!

I'm beginning to understand why my grandmother was so determined to do certain things, she knew that it may be one of the last times she did so. She hauled my grandfather off on a round the world cruise, saying it was a 'once in a lifetime experience' - then made him do it again a few years later! I've always had certain places I love, and want to revisit, and have started to be the same way. Along with friends I rarely get to see, especially since so many of them seem to be dying off lately. Alongside that, I want to try out new things. I haul DBH off to try out new ethnic restaurants, make him walk around cities exploring back streets. Go to art galleries and museums. It's a wonderful world still, despite all that goes on in it. I wish my arthritis didn't inhibit me so much - I can't see me ever going down another zip wire, and I do love that. Getting in and out of small boats is another problem - I have always loved being on water. But I can still go on boat trips on the Broads. There are lots of simple pleasures still to be had, and exhilaration still felt at times!

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 14-May-15 11:24:55

Last time I got into a small boat janer I landed so heavily the bloody thing nearly took in water. hmm

whitewave how did you know that? Thing is, it all nags at you all the time. "Don't eat this", "Must do exercise"... When sometimes you just want to sit and let the misery flow in.

I've got to get out of this mood! Where did it come from?!

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 14-May-15 11:26:49

I read somewhere, "if your dreams don't scare you, they are not big enough". Good one I guess.

Ana Thu 14-May-15 11:27:12

Probably those damn Tories, jingl - they'll have put something in the water...wink

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 14-May-15 11:27:53

I'm going to eat a marmalade sandwich and polish the stairs.

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 14-May-15 11:29:17

Ana grin That'll be it.

That made me laugh out loud annsixty.

whitewave Thu 14-May-15 11:39:52

DD just sent last night "A negative mind will never give you a positive life" that is quite true.

janerowena Thu 14-May-15 11:40:44

And me. grin

jings - I had a glass of wine after I got the news that a friend had died. At 9.15 am. And do you know what - it was wonderful. grin

Anya Thu 14-May-15 11:55:39

Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass....it's about learning to dance in the rain.

Jane that's the way.

Grannyknot Thu 14-May-15 12:18:04

annsixty LOL grin

Grannyknot Thu 14-May-15 12:22:57

jane I agree re the medicinal benefits of alcohol. When my son's new in-laws came to visit here for the first time, I picked up that his MIL was just as nervous as I was (we had only met them once before the wedding!) so I offered to pour us each a little sherry - at 11 a.m. - using the fact that they had battled to find our house as an excuse for needing something to calm the nerves - and when she gladly accepted I knew we would be friends smile Neither of us drink much usually ...

janeainsworth Thu 14-May-15 12:24:20

Maintaining friendships for me.
