The only word to describe whoever broke into my mother's house last night.

Fortunately she wasn't in it having left to go on holiday yesterday. I suspect she was spotted leaving with a suitcase. sad

That's horrible. Your right they are

Mishap Sat 08-Nov-14 16:19:51

It makes you sick.

These things are seldom opportunistic. My parents (then elderly) were broken into shortly after my grandmother died - it was the only time the house had any real valuables in it. They stole all the antique china and jewellery grandma had left. Too much if a coincidence in my book.

And thieves in big cities are known to follow ambulances and descend and empty the house as soon as the patient and family have left for the hospital - that really is sick.

My Mum found it quite psychologically disturbing - she felt violated and got quite down afterwards. It is good that your Mum has you around to support her.

They are indeed b*******s.

The one good thing is that there was no malicious damage but lots of mess it seems. Every drawer, cupboard & wardrobe ransacked.

We don't live in the same country so it should have been more difficult for me to deal with the practicalities than it turned out to be.

I got a call from a police officer who was in the house after a neighbour called them. He needed someone to deal with securing the windows which had been forced.

I called one of my cousins who was great, he arranged for another of our cousins who is a bit of a handyman to meet him at my mum's and they sorted that out. He then waited until the scene of crime people were finished before leaving.

My mother's lovely neighbour is tidying up the house.

I've spoken to my mum and she is remarkably calm about it. I suspect it will hit her later but she is with her two sisters and their husbands so is in good hands.

soontobe Sat 08-Nov-14 16:38:54

Awful.
I suspect those that do it have little idea of how much trauma they cause.

Marelli Sat 08-Nov-14 16:40:10

That's good then, baubles. If she's with family, they can talk it all through with her and no doubt put her mind at ease a bit. Hope they get the b....rds.

annodomini Sat 08-Nov-14 16:45:39

soontobe. They simply don't care "how much trauma they cause".

Bellasnana Sat 08-Nov-14 16:49:58

it has been known for 'would be' burglars to note the times of funerals so that they can break in when it is exopected no-one will be home.angry
I was burgled some years ago when I and my son (who was a teenager at the time) were home shock and it was very traumatic - not so much for the things they stole - but the sense of what could have happened had either of us woken up while they were in the house.
they did steal my handbag which contained the usual cards, cheque books and worst of all - family snaps that I carried in my wallet.
OP hope your mother will be OK with the support of her friends and family - her neighbours sound lovely too.

Agus Sat 08-Nov-14 17:04:39

Hope this hasn't put too much of a damper on your Mum's holiday and I'm pleased to hear she is with her sisters and BiLs who will be a great support and help cheer her up.

Iam64 Sat 08-Nov-14 17:06:04

Glad to hear your mums house is being sorted out Bly lovely neighbour and relatives though. flowers

Atqui Sat 08-Nov-14 17:46:07

What a blessing she wasn't there. Nevertheless , it must be such an awful feeling to think someone has been through your things - violated your home in fact.I hope she won't be too nervous to be there on her own again.

baubles Sat 08-Nov-14 17:57:16

The fear of being alone again in the house is the worrying thing isn't it?

I had previously arranged to go over a few days after her return for her birthday so I'll just keep to that plan. She will have four nights on her own but one of her sisters lives close by.

baubles Sat 08-Nov-14 17:58:49

She does have a wee dog though who has a very loud bark, as I've noticed when going to the loo through the night.

Lona Sat 08-Nov-14 17:59:41

Baubles It's horrible to be burgled, I hope they haven't taken anything of sentimental value flowers for your mum.
I also hope the house is made really secure as sometimes burglars return for a second sweep.

Scooter58 Sat 08-Nov-14 18:20:14
