I just got an email for my singing group - and they want us to sing 'Delilah'!

A song about a MURDER? I don't know quite what to do, as I really don't like this one.

KatyK Sat 04-Oct-14 15:48:46

You could ask 'Why Why Why Delilah!' smile

Flowerofthewest Sat 04-Oct-14 15:51:12

KatyK grin

There is a lovely song I have seen on You Tube sung by a Police choir at the closing of the Commonwealth Games. Its called 'And We Sing' by R and C MacDonald. Beautiful.

Flowerofthewest Sat 04-Oct-14 15:52:34

or 'And we'll Sing' one or the other

KatyK Sat 04-Oct-14 15:52:43

Sorry Alie I didn't mean to trivialise it. blush

AlieOxon Sat 04-Oct-14 16:15:58

But you did.

The group's called 'Singing for Fun'. Murder isn't fun.
Don't we have enough violence around without singing about it for entertainment?

I used to work for Women's Aid. I saw battered women and heard about some who got killed too.

Anyone remember the woman who was knifed outside Cowley Police Station a few years ago?

To me it's analogous to making jokes about rape.
It's not funny.

KatyK Sat 04-Oct-14 16:18:17

I apologise again. To be honest I've never really thought about Delilah being about a murder. It's a popular song that people like to sing along with. Sorry I caused offence.

Ok. Thank you.
If I have made one person think about this song, that's something!

shysal Sat 04-Oct-14 16:31:51

Yes, that woman was known to DD, Alie.
At least the song tells that he is about to be arrested, so he was going be punished. If you can manage to distract yourself from the unpleasant thoughts, it will be a great song to sing in a group!

KatyK Sat 04-Oct-14 16:33:13

You have made me think. Sorry Alie smile My mother was a battered wife and I was a (sometimes) battered child so I do understand.

Soutra Sat 04-Oct-14 16:34:59

I think you should voice your feelings at your choir Alie you may find you have more support than you might imagine.

AlieOxon Sat 04-Oct-14 17:38:30

He may be going to be arrested, but it doesn't help her!
What's the general message?

(Another one like it is 'Banks of the Ohio' which I sang at a folk group years ago and now squirm to think of.)

If a woman doesn't behave, then the man can't help himself....and she gets punished......

KatyK Sat 04-Oct-14 17:40:14

Thinking about it there are a lot of songs with this theme. Remember 'Hang Down Your Head Tom Dooley'?

AlieOxon Sat 04-Oct-14 17:44:49

Yup.
By the way I just got an answer from the woman who sent the song group email. She says (quote)
'What on earth are you talking about it’s just a song.'

I suggested she read my mail again...songs say things.

With so many songs to choose from, I think this is a bad choice and agree with you Alie.

Anya Sat 04-Oct-14 18:22:17

Bad choice. Especially with the number of high profile cases where woman have been murdered by their ex partners.

PS we have a music thread now.

jinglbellsfrocks Sat 04-Oct-14 18:31:13

i thought KatieK's response to the original post was hilarious. grin

AlieOxon Sat 04-Oct-14 18:32:58

I expect some people would.

jinglbellsfrocks Sat 04-Oct-14 18:39:11

it's a pop song. You are taking this too heavily. If you don't want to sing the song, put it to the group. They might choose another one. Or if not, stay at home and miss the enjoyment.

hmm

KatyK Sat 04-Oct-14 18:41:16

It REALLY was a light hearted comment. I would never have pressed the 'post message' button if I thought for a minute it would cause offence blush

AlieOxon Sat 04-Oct-14 18:42:04

You missed something.
It WAS a pop song. They don't play it these days because it's controversial.
Why?.......oh no, I thought I already explained that.

Ana Sat 04-Oct-14 18:42:26

I agree. You can't force others to take your viewpoint, but you can stay away as a protest.

(I thought KatyK's post was very funny too. You can feel strongly about a subject but still keep your sense of humour...)

AlieOxon Sat 04-Oct-14 18:42:46

(The last was for jing of course.)

Ana Sat 04-Oct-14 18:43:27

Of course they play it these days! I heard it last week on the radio. What would old Tom do without the royalties? shock
