Feeling Feminine?[hmmm]

On woman's hour thee was a discussion about heels - on shoes. One of the high profile women said she wore them because it made her feel feminine. it made me think...er.... I don't think I've ever consciously wanted to 'feel feminine'. I'm a woman .I think I feel like a woman. Wearing frilly clothes would make me feel silly and uncomfortable . BTW I love the look of high heeled shoes even though I can't wear them. Do most women want to "feel feminine"??

Mishap Sat 16-Aug-14 10:47:25

High heels to feel feminine - what nonsense! - brainwashed by men into thinking the look attractive, when all they do is ruin your posture, spine and feet - and you risk a broken ankle!

I wear what is comfortable (is there something else other than jeans!?) and I have not noticed any lack of interest from OH or other men! I feel like me, never mind whether that is "feminine."

I live in jeans and wear flat shoes most of the time, I feel like me - I am a woman and don't know how to feel any other way! Sometimes I like to dress up and will wear heels (but not very high!) but I don't need that to feel "feminine".

I've always thought killer heels are the modern day equivalent of Chinese foot binding.

Agree Merlot and not just for the crippling pain. They stop woman from moving about freely.

I have only occasionally worn high heeled shoes to improve an outfit but have spent so much time worrying about not wobbling off them I had no time to consider if I felt more 'feminine' than I did wearing trainers!

I as you have probably gathered I play golf. The dress code is overtly male - polo shirts, spiked masculine shoes, trousers. Some companies try to pretty this up for us with decorated polo shirts, pretty coloured sweaters and skorts (horrendous things designed to make your backside look massive) despite all this I long to get home and change into something more feminine. I like frocks and skirts and although I do wear jeans and trousers but not all the time and I love a nice pair of shoes with heels. I like and wear pretty matching lingerie every day. I wear make up on most days having the occasional day off when at home to soak my face in a nice thick layer of moisturiser. So Yes I do need to feel feminine, more so now I am getting older and losing what few looks I ever had so I need my props. No apologies about that ; doesn't make me any less of a feminist or less capable of serious thought.

Just one final thought. I heard Trinny Woodhall say ' the only being that looks good in a fleece is a sheep', so I chucked out my golf fleeces. I expect that will start a flurry of comment. smile

Indeed it may Sue as I'd never chuck anything out just on the say so of the likes of Trinny Woodhouse.

I was going to scoff at the idea of high heels making a woman feel 'more feminine' until I read your post, Sue, and realised that although I don't wear high heels ever, and skirts and dresses very rarely, I do wear makeup every day and would feel uncomfortable going, say, to work or shopping in town without it.

I don't think it's to make me look more feminine, but perhaps it makes me feel it? Maybe it's my everyday armour against the world! grin

ninathenana Sat 16-Aug-14 12:21:51

I can't wear high heels. I do wear wedges sometimes if I'm dressed up but mostly it's flats.
I won't leave the house without daytime makeup, which is basically mascara and a bit of lippy. This isn't a need to feel feminine it's pride grin

janeainsworth Sat 16-Aug-14 12:47:07

Style is more important to me than femininity.
Sue I have a couple of skorts for tennis, they're just skirts with built-in lycra shorts so you can adopt the ready position, or bend down to pick balls up without showing your knickers and a large expanse of upper thigh, and they are supremely comfortable.

One of my skorts has a slightly frilly appearance, and it does have a feminine feel blush

Nonu Sat 16-Aug-14 12:51:31

I wear high heels when I am in Mauritius and love them .
I liked your post SUE, it mirrors how I feel.

I wear trousers ALL the time but I can't go out without makeup - it would frighten people!! grin

I do have a couple of pairs of wedges and a pair of high heeled boots but would much rather wear flats in an interesting colour than heels. I've never thought about feeling feminine or not - I just feel like me! smile

As I told my dad when he criticised some old clothes – trousers, shirt; he said they weren't very feminine – I was wearing (age 16) to go cycling in:
"I don't have to try to be feminine; I'm feminine by definition" and off I went. He kept his opinions about my clothes to himself after that. Actually, I often wore skirts and dresses in those days. Never high heels though. I valued my feet and my spine too much for that.

thatbags Sat 16-Aug-14 12:58:58

Men, rich ones anyhow, used to wear lace and frills much more than they generally do now.

Galen Sat 16-Aug-14 13:04:45

I hate trousers and shorts. I only wear them for archery and change out of them when I get home.
I like to look neat tidy, and appropriately addressed for the occasion. I'm definitely not a 'frilly' person. Severe tailoring suits me best.
At the moment I'm slumming around in an old dress as I shan't go out or see anyone at all today.
Think I'll go and change into a jumper and skirt as I'm cold though!

Galen Sat 16-Aug-14 13:05:49

Rarely wear make up. CBA

suebailey1 Sat 16-Aug-14 13:10:29

CBA? is it like Give us a Clue?
Chronic Bottom Ache?
Careless Baking Crisis?
Cant Be arsed? perhaps that's it! smile

Last one! Darling daughter's favourite expressionhmm

Mishap Sat 16-Aug-14 13:36:09

No skirts, no make-up, no high heels, no hair products - but I don't feel unfeminine - just content and comfortable.

Agus Sat 16-Aug-14 14:22:21

I was a born tomboy so definitely not the frilly type. I see certain looks which are good on other people though but know they would look ridiculous on me.
Classic styles suit me best and that is what I am comfortable in plus a touch of make up.

Although I live mostly in flats, jeans, shirts and cardi's. I have two pairs of court heels, black patent and nude which I wear with dresses/skirt suits for some ocassions.

One look I have never understood though is high heels with trousers!

Re feminine, if there is a certain look, it passed me by. I was never short of boyfriends though grin. The night I met DH, I was wearing denims, T shirt and my Father's long cardi!

ffinnochio Sat 16-Aug-14 15:47:49

Been digging in the garden a lot today, wearing shorts, wellies and t-shirt. Was told I had a "Glasto" look. hmm

Occasionally I wear a loose dress when it's v. hot, but otherwise I follow Mishap's sartorial approach. smile

HollyDaze Sat 16-Aug-14 16:12:01

One look I have never understood though is high heels with trousers!

Depending on the trousers and the high heels, it can look very, very good.

I like my high heels (and I have no fallen arches, no bunions (because I make sure the shoes actually fit my feet), no squished toes and my spine if perfectly straight) and will wear them if the occasion calls for it.

I have noticed that when I spend time getting dressed up to go out, it does make me feel different (in a good way) but whether that is feeling feminine or just feeling good about myself, I have no idea; it's unimportant - it's a positive feeling and that's what counts.

rosesarered Sat 16-Aug-14 16:49:46

I have read that a low heel is the best for posture and the spine, not high heels or flats. As a matter of fact I DO feel more feminine in a skirt or dress, and I wonder if that affects the way I act and speak as a result.Interesting thought. I shall do my own little survey.
As someone says, 'we are feminine by definition!' However some women are definitely more feminine than others in looks, and thought [and acts presumably.] Just as some men are more masculine than others.

Nonu Sat 16-Aug-14 17:05:15

I agree with that Statement 100% ROSES.

Stands to sense really!!
