Isn't Mothering Sunday a Christian thing? I don't really 'do' it in the sense that many others seem to do, but I know that my MIL and stepmother do like having a card, so I always make sure I send them one (DH thinks it's a waste of money). DDs don't send me anything and I don't mind, most of the time, but the more it's hyped up and I hear on Facebook (or Gransnet) of other people doing things, the more challenged I feel, so now I don't really know what I feel about it. Both daughters did text me to apologise for not sending a card, but saying they love me (and a few other lovely things too
) so that made me feel happy. Logically though I'm not sure I like the idea of just one day a year when mothers are thought about - and to line the pockets of florists and card manufacturers.
However....I also feel the loss of my own mother, as Kiora and Penstemmon have mentioned. She died in 1986 of cancer, before I had a chance to properly get to know her again as a person and mother (we had a turbulent history) and though I reassured her many times that I loved her before she died, we never had the time to forge that wonderful bond that some mothers and daughters have. I feel very envious of those who still have their mothers, even though I had 'issues' with mine, and I feel so sad that she never lived to see her little granddaughters grow into the lovely young women they are now, or meet her little great-granddaughter. Cherish your mothers, those of you who still have them; try to build bridges if that needs to be done, before it's too late.
