Whether you are a Gran, Nan, Gdad, Gpa, with or without grandchildren have a great day.

We are having a lovely walk at our nearest National Trust gardens then back home for my favourite, a roast beef dinner.

What are you up to ?

I have had cards from both my sons and two of my grandaughters gave me sweets. That is all I want and am very happy.
I think myself very lucky compared to one of my sisters. Her elder daughter died a few years ago and she is not on speaking terms with her younger daughter, and has no contact with her grandchildren now.
I feel for her surrounded by all this commercial hype and the glories of Facebook.

Happy Mother's Day to all.

Penstemmon Sun 30-Mar-14 20:45:33

I remember going to church on Mothering Sunday (1950s) and being given a small posy to give to my mother. That is all I remember doing. Now society is more secular and commercial enterprise is god we have cards, flowers, gifts, meals and a lot of heartache if some unfortunate son/daughter does not live up to the commercial expectation!

My DDs did pop in to see me at different times today with assorted DGCs which was lovely but is what happens most Sundays. Which is lovely too!

nice simple explanation of it (Love the very last two or three lines)

Sounds like there is a lot of guesswork over the origins because they date so far back.

OOps! My comment was for Jingl LOL LOL LOL

rosesarered Sun 30-Mar-14 20:34:35

The Church changes very slowly, especially the Catholic Church.

jinglbellsfrocks Sun 30-Mar-14 20:28:47

Lot of water gone under the bridge since the sixteenth century.

It predates the Reformation jingl. People attended the Mother Church on Laetare Sunday and the Pope blessed the Golden Rose. But you are, of course, right about children, including those who lived away from the family home, visiting their mothers, originally with bunches of violets. Simnel Cake is based on the mid-Lent reading for the day.

Easy to find! Read it for details!

Penstemmon Sun 30-Mar-14 20:22:58

I didn't...it is something lurking in the back of my brain.. happy to be wrong., but will look it up now to check it out! wink

jinglbellsfrocks Sun 30-Mar-14 20:17:10

I think it was simply a day the girls in domestic service were allowed to go home to see their mums, taking with them a simnel cake they had been allowed to bake in the kitchen of the big house. Never heard this stuff about "mother churches". How far are you going back to dig that out?

Penstemmon Sun 30-Mar-14 20:10:44

I believe it was the day that that those in service went back to their own 'mother' church rather than the one where their masters worshiped. Of course it meant children saw their mothers as they returned to their home towns/villages.

Isn't Mothering Sunday a Christian thing? I don't really 'do' it in the sense that many others seem to do, but I know that my MIL and stepmother do like having a card, so I always make sure I send them one (DH thinks it's a waste of money). DDs don't send me anything and I don't mind, most of the time, but the more it's hyped up and I hear on Facebook (or Gransnet) of other people doing things, the more challenged I feel, so now I don't really know what I feel about it. Both daughters did text me to apologise for not sending a card, but saying they love me (and a few other lovely things too smile ) so that made me feel happy. Logically though I'm not sure I like the idea of just one day a year when mothers are thought about - and to line the pockets of florists and card manufacturers.
However....I also feel the loss of my own mother, as Kiora and Penstemmon have mentioned. She died in 1986 of cancer, before I had a chance to properly get to know her again as a person and mother (we had a turbulent history) and though I reassured her many times that I loved her before she died, we never had the time to forge that wonderful bond that some mothers and daughters have. I feel very envious of those who still have their mothers, even though I had 'issues' with mine, and I feel so sad that she never lived to see her little granddaughters grow into the lovely young women they are now, or meet her little great-granddaughter. Cherish your mothers, those of you who still have them; try to build bridges if that needs to be done, before it's too late.

Had a lovely box of chocolates and photos from my son and family overseas. Also an email message so feeling quite happy. DH has treated me to a weekend away. Can't complain. smile. Best wishes to all grans with grandchildren at a distance.

Thank you all. Counting blessings. I have many. flowers for you all. X

NanKate Sun 30-Mar-14 14:41:05

Dragonfly1 I feel so sad for you without your girl. I send you a big hug and you are in my thoughts.

Penstemmon Sun 30-Mar-14 14:34:28

Thinking of my mum today..she would have been 92 on Friday just gone but died in 1984. I still miss having her around, sorry she did not see her beautiful granddaughters grow up or her four grandsons at all.

I see aspects of her in my girls, especially DD1 and so she lives on!

Kiora Sun 30-Mar-14 14:31:17

flowers for you dragonfly. You made me realise I should count my lucky stars all my children and Grandchildren are well. My own long deceased mother is in my thoughts too. She was a grandmother for such a very short time. So I'm doubly lucky. I won't see any of my own children today but i'v had cards, flowers and chocolates and kisses and hugs from 5 of my lovely grandchildren.

harrigran Sun 30-Mar-14 14:02:47

I have had phone call from DIL saying they are all unwell and GD1 is being sick so would I postpone until tomorrow. Happy to oblige then they will stay in their PJs or go back to bed.
DD, in Lisbon, sent bouquet yesterday and posted on facebook this morning. I am going to curl up on the sofa and watch a film smile

janeainsworth Sun 30-Mar-14 13:31:35

OGM flowers for you too.
I find I'm thinking more about my own mother today, long gone, than about my two lovely DDs and DS.

Tegan Sun 30-Mar-14 12:35:25

A typical Mothers day for me years ago was waiting on tables to help a friend out [someone had let them down and they were obviously busy with mothers day meals] then getting home later to a cry of 'hello mum; whats for dinner, we're starving'. Mind you, I've got next to me a pop up card that my son must have made at school; found it when I was having my post retirement sort out. Don't think his writing has changed much since then either confused. I have had a card from both of them today. I think my son growing up has been the biggest shock to the system; my relationship with my daughter being more of a natural progression turning into a friendship. Not quite sure what the relationship with my boy is now other than the fact that I never stop worrying about him.

Grandmanorm Sun 30-Mar-14 11:54:15

Happy Mothering Sunday to all. Dragonfly flowers

Oldgreymare Sun 30-Mar-14 11:45:29

A day of mixed emotions, and I've got the miseries!
Sad: remembering loved ones and Mothering Sundays long gone, both spent with my Mum or with my boys growing up.
flowers to all feeling like me!

glammanana Sun 30-Mar-14 11:40:49

Gally a girl after my own heart as I am still in my PJs I think the clock going forward has put me right out grin
Hoping everyone has a lovely day either seeing family or just remembering the time when we became mums flowers to everyone.
