Whether you are a Gran, Nan, Gdad, Gpa, with or without grandchildren have a great day.

We are having a lovely walk at our nearest National Trust gardens then back home for my favourite, a roast beef dinner.

What are you up to ?

It predates the Reformation jingl. People attended the Mother Church on Laetare Sunday and the Pope blessed the Golden Rose. But you are, of course, right about children, including those who lived away from the family home, visiting their mothers, originally with bunches of violets. Simnel Cake is based on the mid-Lent reading for the day.

Lot of water gone under the bridge since the sixteenth century.

The Church changes very slowly, especially the Catholic Church.

nice simple explanation of it (Love the very last two or three lines)

Sounds like there is a lot of guesswork over the origins because they date so far back.

I remember going to church on Mothering Sunday (1950s) and being given a small posy to give to my mother. That is all I remember doing. Now society is more secular and commercial enterprise is god we have cards, flowers, gifts, meals and a lot of heartache if some unfortunate son/daughter does not live up to the commercial expectation!

My DDs did pop in to see me at different times today with assorted DGCs which was lovely but is what happens most Sundays. Which is lovely too!

I have had cards from both my sons and two of my grandaughters gave me sweets. That is all I want and am very happy.
I think myself very lucky compared to one of my sisters. Her elder daughter died a few years ago and she is not on speaking terms with her younger daughter, and has no contact with her grandchildren now.
I feel for her surrounded by all this commercial hype and the glories of Facebook.

Happy Mother's Day to all.
