Warm clothing

I would recommend Uniqlo heattech, you can get it in varying degrees of warmth. I find it’s great as you can just wear the tops and joggers under your ordinary clothes

I bought a Damart thermal long sleeved vest, on now and brilliant, previously used M&S not so good, I use HotHands individual warmers for hands if wearing gloves, they do them for feet too.

Lidl had a special offer on merino wool long johns and long-sleeved tops a couple of years ago for around £15 each. I can’t tell you how warm I’ve been wearing them on really cold days - well worth the expense.

Try the base layers advertised by outdoor shops.

Not really cold here yet. Had some lovely days during the week where I didn’t need a coat - in Northumberland.

I’ve just bought 2 Thermolactyl black long sleeved T shirts from Damart, they are very smart and you can’t tell that they are Thermal.

I use a long sleeved vest from M&S, thinner jumper (wool/merino) and then thicker woollen jumpers over the top. I have built up quite a collection. Natural fibres are more pricey but they are definitely the best option for keeping warm in the winter.

Thermal tights under trousers and walking boots with double socks keep my toes relatively cosy. Last year I bought a beautiful lamb skin jacket from a charity shop, hardly worn. My next purchase or make will be a cosy hat, again non-acrylic.

It is worth investing in natural fibres. Woolovers have some good jumpers in their sales.

The various climbing/walking suppliers are all on line now. you will be able to find good recommendations

As I’m getting older, I find I’m suffering really badly with cold feet. I try to keep moving them but it doesn’t seem to help. Any recommendations out there?

Sarahmob - what about legwarmers? I find if my ankles are warm then my feet are, too.

Sarahmob At home I live in my slipper boots from this firm www.moshulu.co.uk/. They are fur lined and keep my feet very warm.

I have brick floors in my house so consequently my feet get cold. I bought some wool slippers which are lovely and warm - Mahabis or Birkenstock.

I'll have to look for online mountaineering suppliers I think. M&S and Damart just aren't warm enough, and I think I said I'd been wearing these for years.
If you live on a farm with an open fire for heat you'll understand how cold it can get even in the UK, especially in the morning when you get up!
I'm a fussy bugger person and can't abide long johns, so thank you to the person who suggested leg warmers. I'll look up mountaineering retailers and see who to contact for vests and suchlike.

Sarah, I use a large enough size of trainers so that I can wear them with thick fleecy insoles.

Shoes and trainers should be big enough to put warm socks inside, without feeling the trainers or shoes are tight.It is the still air pockets that keep you warm.

They have good sales offers at Mountain Warehouse online, ExD - 20% off everything at the moment I think. Good bae layer stuff there.

I find this too. Always have, in fact. I used to wear ankle warmers when I was warming up for dancing. Now I wear them rather a lot in the winter months.

I have some silk teeshirt vests from John Lewis and wear them with one of my Woolovers pure wool jumpers when it starts getting cold.
And below that I have one of 3 wool tweed skirts, home made, that never wear out. And wool knee highs.
Thank God I don't feel the cold not like my husband who always wants the heating on high [angry}.

As I was beginning to feel the cold more I bought a thermal T-shirt and long johns from M&S bit found the long johns too bulky under my trousers. This year I bought two sets of silk T-shirt’s and long johns. They are like a second skin and feel much smoother under clothing.
Cashmere, although pricey, lasts for years and keeps me warm all day. I buy cashmere wool to knit a very simple to follow pattern for hats as I end up with sore ears, especially on a windy day, if go out without a hat. Another easy to follow knitting pattern is a triangle shaped shawl to go over my shoulders if I feel chilly. I have made two now with alpaca wool and instantly feel warmer without having to put on another jumper and just leave handy it on the back of my chair. One in the bedroom to cover my shoulders when sitting in bed reading.
