Hi all

I recently had a hysterectomy and so I am recuperating and looking for a really good TV series to watch. I loved watching Last Tango in Halifax, The Split, Happy Valley, Call the Midwife and currently watching The Flood when its on. I love anything with Sarah Lancashire and Nicola Walker in. Any ideas?? Thank you for reading.

Shetland and Finders Keepers are good.
Make the most of your recovery time. X

Take out a monthly contract on ITVX. This has been combined with BritBox and there are lots of older series on there. The Unforgotten with Nicola Walker springs to mind.

I’ve terminated my Netflix subscription in favour of ITVX - I think they have much more to offer.

Also on ITVX is Bodies. A criminal investigation across time.

If you like Nicola Walker, Annika is a good one.

Speaking of Bodies - there is another series with that name set in an Ops and Gynae ward, starring Max Beesley and Patrick Baladi, which is gripping. Not suitable for pregnant women, but an excellent watch. BBC iPlayer.

Obs (Obstetrics) and Gynae - bloody autocorrect.

Another vote for Seaside Hotel here - charming Danish series, cross between Downton abbey and Upstairs Downstairs. You soon get used to the subtitles. Find it on Channel 4 catch up under World Drama category, ‘Walter Presents’

I can recommend UKtv Play, some very good series on here. My favourite one at the moment is an Australian series called The Heart Guy. It stars Rodger Corser, who I think is gorgeous. He is a heart surgeon who disgraces himself in a large Sydney hospital, so returns to his home town hospital, to do a years penance. It has a lot of humour and pathos, his family are a bit nuts, but it's a lovely gentle watch, with around 4 series I think. Hope you recover well.

If you don't mind foreign series with subtitles there is a Belgian drama on the All4 streaming service called The Twelve about a court case, with the focus on the jury members. It's the best foreign language drama I have watched on TV. For something a bit lighter, a charming Danish series called Seaside Hotel.

Crime is brilliant if your Scottish

Crime was brilliant for me and I’m not Scottish!

The Split stars Nicola Walker and is very good. It is about a family law firm, a mother and her two daughters run the firm and there is another daughter.

Have you already watched the Fargo series?
We both liked those - not so much series 4 but recently finished series 5.

Currently watching Transatlantic

On-the-fluffy-fluffy side (so far) drama about the Emergency Rescue Committee in Marseilles, 1940 really fabulous costumes biglouis - with Schiaparelli type hats, glove dresses etc. Beautiful vehicles - set against the arrival of the Nazis...

Slightly wacky but engaging rom-com type series from Australia:

m.imdb.com/title/tt1530541/

Called "Offspring".

You "listen to her thoughts" and quickly accept it as part of the humour.

By chance I came across an adaptation of Olive Kitteridge, if you’re a fan of Elizabeth Strout, or even if you’re not, it’s an absolute treat.
I don’t very often get into anything on television, but I want to watch it again, it was lovely.

Yes that is very good. Frances McDormand plays OK.

For £5.99 a month you can have ITVX which has Britbox included. All the lovely old BBC and ITV programmes. The Jewel in the Crown, Larkrise to Candleford, All Creatures Great and Small original series. Hundreds of lovely things! There is no contract, so you can cancel whenever you want.

I finally got Netflix and binge watched The Lincoln Lawyer and loved it.

I am not keen on police dramas, anything with too much violence or science fiction. Therefore, the the series below are what I would suggest.

Virgin River on Netflix is easy watching.

Fisk is a great comedy set in Australia. It's about a small town lawyer. Also on Netflix

Dead to me is a comedy drama about two women who meet at a support group for widows. It is quite light hearted. Christina Applegate is the main actor. Also on Netflix.

I also recommend Dark which a German science fiction series. It has subtitles. Also Netflix

I have to say I am not on commission from Netflix grin

My SIL is hooked on Outlander which is a time travel drama set in Scotland. It is on my to be watched list

The new series of Interview with the Vampire on BBC iPlayer is fantastic - if you like that kind of thing. There is also a series called The Mayfair Witches which is also based on the Anne Rice books. I can't recommend as I haven't watched it yet.

I also fancy Lessons in Chemistry which has recently come out on Apple TV. The book was great. Unfortunately, we don't subscribe to Apple TV. Maybe I will do a months free trial and then cancel it grin

We have Sky TV and we have an app on it for ITVX. It is free to watch. I am not sure why we are not paying for it unless it is free with Sky

If you like Sarah Lancashire try ‘ Julia’. Two series have been on Sky Atlantic. Hopefully you could get them on Catch Up.
It is about Julia Child the TV cook

Sara1954 Mon 05-Feb-24 11:59:20

Pinkcosmos, we get it free as well, but I think it’s a restricted service.

Purplepixie Mon 05-Feb-24 12:04:18

Thank you for all of your ideas. I will certainly see if I can find the Olive Kitteridge one, as I have read all of the books by Elizabeth Strout.

I’ve seen the Split and loved it. Also I will have a look at Julia with Sarah Lancashire.

If Detectorists is new to you, try an episode.

Eric123 Mon 05-Feb-24 12:07:54

Try “Fool Me Once”, with the superb Joanna Lumley. An 8 episode series with incredible twists and turns that keeps you enthralled and you can binge watch on Netflix
