If you are watching Missing what do you think of it . it's complicated isn't it? stories within stories and changing countries and changing years I m really having to keep on my toes to follow it I am enjoying it though One criticism is I wish the wife and girlfriend looked less alike I have to keep translate which is which it is getting better now I m more familiar with the story line but the first couple of episodes foxed me

Eloethan Sat 12-Nov-16 00:00:49

Maybe someone tampered with the evidence.

BlueBelle Sat 12-Nov-16 06:28:00

Having googled a bit about Baptise ( I can't pronounce or spell his real name) said it was so complicated the cast had to ask the directors to write down a sort of timeline of events for them to follow as they were all confused Makes me feel a whole lot better

morethan2 Sat 12-Nov-16 07:04:22

It's just too confusing for me. confused I'm not really enjoying it that much I just want to know the ending. Although I have a horrible feeling it will be disappointing...again. The other reason I'm finding it annoying is because the family life on an army barracks just doesn't ring true. I must be getting old because I like a storyline to have a beginning, a middle and an end. Not an beginning, middle, beginning middle, middle, beginning middle of the middle, and probably no real ending. I'll have to stick to midsummer murders from now on.

What bit about living in army barracks isn't true morethan I spent 12 years living in service quarters and if you mean all the naughties that is going on blimey the News of the World wouldn't have handled what was going on in my experience one posting we had was known as Suicide alley because of the number of wives who killed themselves ( mostly gas oven stuff in those days) because of husbands affairs etc Wouldn't have been a bit surprised to have found a murder or two although I didn't

Welshwife Sat 12-Nov-16 07:52:35

I didn't know we still had sush large camps still in Germany - do people stay in one posting for so long?

morethan2 Sat 12-Nov-16 08:30:59

No Blubell I wasn't talking about the naughties, that sort of thing goes on, even the smallest village everywhere in the world. It was more the ambience, the feel of the personnel, the quarters and barracks. I too spent a long time living in army quarters and now have a son who does. It's just a personal take on it from my own experiences. Mind you what really gets to my husband is in any film or t.v show featuring army personnel is the way they wear their berets, but this is digressing from the main point of the thread. I have real trouble following the story line. Do any of you know when is the last episode? Soon I hope. I just want it wrapped up.

Mumsy Sat 12-Nov-16 08:53:06

Its getting more confusing than ever!

Greyduster Sat 12-Nov-16 17:33:30

That gets us too, morethan. The first couple of episodes they looked like they had pancakes on their heads; then someone must have sorted them out! I don't suppose they have time to soak them, shape them to their heads and then kick them up and down a corridor like we used to! grin

I wondered about the treatment for Alice's dad's burns. I know there are army plastic surgeons who work to repair damage from war wounds, would he not be entitled to the same treatment? Or does the army not treat soldiers whose injuries aren't received in battle?

Jalima Sun 13-Nov-16 11:49:25

Perhaps he refused any more treatment; he certainly seemed to want to discharge himself from hospital too soon
(I think, getting a bit confused)

Re length of service in Germany - don't different regiments go for a set period then another regiment take their place - surely they don't decide how long they want to stay there themselves?

trisher Sun 13-Nov-16 12:06:30

He was offered plastic surgery in Germany but told he would have to pay for it. I wondered about it because I know there is an excellent army plastic surgery unit in Hatfield and would have thought he would have been sent there. (Oh and that's a thought he would be 'sent' not go by choice). I suspect there are loads of holes in this series if you look carefully, but it is gripping and thought provoking. Just don't look too closely!!!

Jalima Sun 13-Nov-16 13:26:22

Oh, missed that bit (I think I need to watch it twice!)

trisher Sun 13-Nov-16 18:49:29

It was quite early on. I only noticed because I knew someone who was an army plastic surgeon, so it sort of stood out. Trouble with the time shifts is it makes it harder to remember things

grumppa Sun 13-Nov-16 19:41:24

He was offered plastic surgery (not sure where) and told he wouldn't have to pay, but told his wife that he would have to.

gillybob Sun 13-Nov-16 21:24:50

I am sure he was offered plastic surgery in Germany trisher and the surgeon said he would not have to pay for it or that he would waive his fees. Then he (Sam) told his wife that they could not afford the surgery.

trisher Sun 13-Nov-16 22:04:57

He said he would waive the fees but there wouldn't have been any fees if he had been sent to England for treatment. I just wondered what the usual process was for army personnel not injured in battle. Army plastic surgeons worked in the NHS when there wasn't any fighting but were recalled and are now dealing with people injured in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Jalima Sun 13-Nov-16 23:39:23

He would have been treated by the NHS if not by the Army. I wonder if it has any significance to the story hmm
Or if it will be an unexplained loose end.

Did anyone see it last night? I think it's starting to sort itself out a bit but it is still very confusing. I was trying to think who the abductor of Alice/Sophie reminds me of and it's Mark Rylance, he of Wolf Hall fame. Did anyone else notice? Perhaps it really is MR but the credits rolled so fast I couldn't see. Does anyone know who the little girl is? If 'Alice' is really Sophie could the little girl be Alice? Puzzled? I certainly am.

Jalima Thu 17-Nov-16 16:08:54

SPOILER ALERT!

It's not Mark Rylance but I see the resemblance - I wondered who he reminded me of.

Right - my theory for what it's worth.
The Army Press Liaison Officer would possibly have been too young to be in Iraq? but, through his job, has knowledge of what went on there.
Stone, the butcher's wife and the one who died (Daniel's father) all did something in Iraq and he blackmailed them, found out that Stone/dead man had kidnapped Alice and Sophie and the other German girl.
He said he would rescue them but had his own agenda.

He and Alice put the body of the German girl (who may have died from malnutrition) in the shed. Her DNA (still not sure how they got much DNA but possibly the remains weren't burnt too much) matched Sam, Alice's father, because he had had a fling with a German woman and the girl (Lena?) was the result.

Lucy is the child of Alice/Sophie - still not sure which of those two she is as she spoke some French (which Alice could have learnt from Sophie anyway).
The little girl can't be Alice because Alice will be about 23 now.
Alice/Sophie has been sent to Switzerland and the nasty soldier has the child Lucy.

Sorry, I am forgetting the names! And someone else may have a different theory.

merlotgran Thu 17-Nov-16 17:07:49

Last night's was even more confusing with yet another time zone to sort out and Baptiste's hallucinations are not helping either.

Still loving it though.

NotTooOld Thu 17-Nov-16 17:29:32

Jalima - is your real name Miss Marple? grin Your theory sounds very plausible.

Of course, the little girl is Alice/Sophie's daughter. I forgot she had one.

They all look so glum, don't they? I wish the women didn't look so similar as in the early stages I couldn't work out who was who but it's a bit easier now we know more about them.

Candlefran Thu 17-Nov-16 17:31:32

Yes, I'm still loving it. But have completely given up on actually following the story. It might all become clear by the end, or at least I might 'get 'most of it.

Greyduster Thu 17-Nov-16 17:32:34

jalima I am full of admiration for anyone that can come up with any sort of theory as to what is going on at the moment and all the flashbacks are phasing me. I am also finding it very difficult to believe how any one could get away with wandering into a care home unchallenged to carry out violence against one of the inmates, and also that Mrs Webster was able to get her hands on the personnel records she passed to Baptiste. I remain to be convinced that could happen.

BlueBelle Thu 17-Nov-16 17:47:45

I think Brig Stone, the butchers wife, and the press officer were the three people involved in the kidnap I think Alice is dead and Sophie is the one whose been sent out the way to Switzerland I think the little girl is Sophies and the press officer the father but they were locked up upstairs and the little girl spoke of mummy in the basement so is there still the third girl in the basement or is she the dead burned body? I think Read ( who supposedly committed suicide) knew something and was being blackmailed by one of the three
Julian Baptise s hallucinations are making it more difficult and I m wondering if he will even survive the next two episodes
I may have that all wrong

Mamie Thu 17-Nov-16 17:55:57

I think Alice is Ilsa (Alis?) who we are being encouraged to think is male. The girl that her mother identified as Alice in the rollercoaster picture looked quite boyish.
