So.... what's it going to be on Sunday evening?

Looks like a titanic telly watching clash on Sunday evening..... Indian Summers on Channel 4 and A Casual Vacancy on BBC1. I was getting quite excited by the BBC1 offering, as it looked a bit like Jam & Jerusalem meets Last Tango in Halifax, but now I think I'm leaning towards Channel 4 (even with the irritating adverts). I haven't read JK Rowling's book, but it was pretty humourless by the sound of it. At least there will be some nice scenery and posh frocks in Indian Summers. Filmed in Malaysia apparently with Penang standing in for Simla.

Because it is quite similar?[groan] emoticon

Thankful for i player and channel 4+1 if you can stay awake.

rosequartz Thu 12-Feb-15 19:50:32

I am all for posh frocks and nice scenery.

Perhaps I will record the JKR offering (supposedly based on the town where she grew up so it will be nothing like it or the people who live there).

Lapwing Thu 12-Feb-15 19:54:48

I tried reading The Casual Vacancy but gave up after about 30 pages. Very disappointing especially as I had enjoyed her private detective books.

Like the sound of Indian Summers and the frocks should be good to see.

I think we will watch BBC live and the other channels later, simply so that we can skip the ads.

I'm looking forward to a marathon telly night. Call the Midwife followed by The Casual Vacancy then Indian Summers on +1.

Wine and choccies will be a necessity wink

I was thinking along the lines of an early night and a good book. I do not fancy Saturday or Sunday night TV, or most of the other nights if I stop to think about it.

Not forgetting Mr Selfridge !

I hadn't realized Indian Summers and The Casual Vacancy clashed. The trailers for both look interesting.

Tegan Fri 13-Feb-15 12:23:02

They've been showing trailers for Indian Summer for so long I thought I'd missed it confused so I'm relieved to find that I haven't. Can't recall Julie Walters ever appearing in anything that's been less than excellent.

Ana Fri 13-Feb-15 13:07:39

I think Indian Summers is definitely one to record, as it's 1hr 40 mins long with adverts. An it's on for 10 weeks!

GillT57 Fri 13-Feb-15 13:17:04

I Hate Mr Selfridge, cant put my finger on why, just grates on my nerves. My plan is to watch A Casual Vacancy and record Indian Summers ( to watch later and able to skip through adverts.) We usually record a few programmes during the week as Saturday night Tv seems to pander to the lowest common denominator, all game shows and 'family inane crap entertainment'

jo1book Fri 13-Feb-15 13:46:23

GillT57.
You might like SPIRAL on BBC4. Subtitles, as in french, but cracking and does not pander to low intelligence.
Like you, can't get my head around Mr. Selfridge.
Hope Casual V. is better than book - only managed a few pages!

GillT57 Fri 13-Feb-15 14:26:30

will give that a go Jo thanks. We usually dig out a recorded Foyles War on a Saturday evening as that seems to be the only evening when we have the time to watch the 2 hrs of it. Have watched the last one now so will give Spiral a look.

jo1book Fri 13-Feb-15 14:38:41

It's very, very good but suggest you watch from beginning to get it all. The new series is 5 so you four to have a go at.
Have you found the Channel 4 on DEMAND, drama section. They have some of the old classic serials such as Camomile Lawn and a Dance to the Music of Time.

TerriBull Fri 13-Feb-15 15:54:09

jo1book, agree with you regarding Spiral, best thing on tv at the moment, love it. When this current series is finished I'm going to order the first four through my dvd rental club, in the right order, so I can piece together the dynamics of the main characters' personal lives.

I will definitely be watching Casual Vacancy, I think I'm one of the few people on GN who found the book good it seems. I hadn't any preconceptions about J K Rowling's writing as I had no interest in delving into Harry Potter I just bought them for the kids when they were growing up. I have also enjoyed her Robert Galbraith books too.

We will record the Indian Summers drama and watch it in the week it looks promising and I will suggest to my husband we could watch that instead of the Midsummer Murders drivel he put on a couple of nights ago.

Purpledaffodil Fri 13-Feb-15 19:21:34

Terribull I must join you in enjoying Casual Vacancy. Not sure if the TV version will be as good, but always interesting to compare.

EEJit Sat 14-Feb-15 08:47:27

I think I'll give it all a miss and read a book.

Oldgreymare Sat 14-Feb-15 09:30:50

Casual Vacancy, no, the book was so disappointing!
I'm with Tegan and will go with Julie Walters especially now I've read the RT articles!

jo1book Sat 14-Feb-15 09:53:13

TerriBull. As I expect you like the scandi dramas too you might like this little remark from a Danish friend to the effect they just love Midsummer Murders in Denmark! They probably enjoy the light tone, just for a change.

TerriBull Sat 14-Feb-15 20:46:57

Yes jo1book, we are a fan of the Scandi dramas in our house, glad to know they are loving Midsummer Murders in Denmark, I know it goes down well in America, possibly they think we all live in quintessential Cotswold type villages, chocolate box pretty but more dangerous than living alongside a multitude of Colombian drug barons! However, I think Sweden reciprocated with some of their tosh recently, a slightly Agatha Christiesque period piece if I remember rightly, not up to the usual standard we have come to expect, they can have that one back!

jo1book Sat 14-Feb-15 23:12:10

Did you find THE LEGACY on Sky Arts? Terrific.
Like you I thought that fifties style thing awful. Husband liked it; left him to it.

Marelli Sun 15-Feb-15 06:36:15

Speaking of Spiral - did anyone watch the last episode last night? I thought the father of Laure's unborn baby was the chap in the previous series who was killed by the bomb...but at the very end, (don't want to spoil this for anyone who hasn't watched it yet) the doctor asked the other policemen (Gilous, etc) to contact the father, and it seemed as if they then left to go and tell him. So who was he?

Pittcity Sun 15-Feb-15 09:38:22

jo1book I loved The Legacy. So glad it didn't end and left cliffhangers for the next series.

jo1book Sun 15-Feb-15 10:17:00

MARELLI. She doesn't know (she said in the first episode of this series) which of her two blokes is the father. I think Gilou is jumping the gun but they are probably setting up a storyline for the next series.
