anyone else been watching it...I am finding it a good drama, but must admit it has been a bit brutal..especially last week with the young police lady.

merlotgran Tue 20-May-14 22:43:49

We've been talking about it on the 'Prey' thread, biker, just to confuse everyone! confused

We should migrate over here really.

bikergran Tue 20-May-14 22:45:10

oh soz will take a look there...

durhamjen Tue 20-May-14 23:44:25

Pretty brutal today, too.

I too am enjoying it, but I was very annoyed last night, because I did feel the writer let the story-line down, with Sarah not getting back-up instantly. I do not think it would have saved the brutality, which indeed was horrendous, but would have kept the 'authenticity' of the plot. Good story though, great acting too.

Just watched last night's recording - still brutal but so well acted - another two episodes to go!

J52 Wed 21-May-14 08:39:14

Despite the bruitality, I am enjoying it more than some recent dramas. I agree that she would have called for back up, surely training makes it an instant reaction.
It probably is more realistic than many police dramas? Looking forward to the next two episodes. Joe Armstrong looks incredibly like his father.( sorry if that's an obvious comment). X

Gripping and scary, excellent acting. Thanks for starting the thread Bikergran, I looked yesterday on TV forum while in the car ,but I don't watch Prey, so I didnt read that thread. I had to ask a friend how they managed to escape, as it was so violent I couldn't look!what happened to his mother BTW?

Charleygirl Wed 21-May-14 08:55:21

I do not have hearing problems but I find that at times I cannot hear what they are saying. There was not always clear diction, many times it was mumbling (for me anyway).

It was brutal and I agree, she should have had back up before she entered the house and certainly when she realised that the woman had been kidnapped. Also definitely before the fellow came indoors and brutally assaulted her.

suebailey1 Wed 21-May-14 08:57:00

I am watching it- last night was very violent. I did think knowing there is a police killer on the loose and she already has her suspicions why were the police not going out in twos? Is it the cuts- is that the reality of modern policing? Scary.

I think Sarah Lancashire does the best crying of any actress - and she does it in everything- runny mascara and all.

whenim64 Wed 21-May-14 10:01:38

Yes, there was some mumbling last night, Charleygirl (I'm on high-alert after the Jamaica Inn debacle! grin) What a fantastic drama, though. Sarah Lancashire is brilliant, but I found the end shocking last night and sat there stunned as the credits rolled. Can't wait for episode 5.

Biker

I think this is brilliant . Sarah Lancashire really is an excellent actress isn't she. They are all good.

The story is hard hitting and that is a fact of life, sad to say, but it is done with human emotions being shown in the raw and it is proving to be a series I want to watch and can't wait for the next episode.

I just want to hug her grandson.

It's all a bit tediously over the top for me but I cope by speeding through the boring bits.

I loved Last Tango though.

GillT57 Wed 21-May-14 10:41:10

I think it is one of the best dramas we have had in a long time. the writing is excellent, I find myself laughing at things that really aren't funny then feeling guilty as I do (the very first scene when the addict was threatening to set fire to himself), and getting really frustrated by the accountant chap, in other words really engaging with the characters. The descriptions and depictions of the reality of life for the addicted is horrifying, certainly nothing glamorous about it, and the contrast of Tommy Lee looking so innocent/good looking and his vile character is excellent. The theme of what we would consider to be good people going bad through greed or jealousy, the look of shock and affection on the face of Tommy when he realised he had a son..... It merits awards I think. Excellent stuff and Sarah Lancashire is terrific

I am also interested in how the sub plots will pan out. There was obviously a spark between the CID officer and Kate when they met again at the station. What will happen to Ryan? The abducted girl seems to have inner self preservation strength. Do you think there will be more series? X

POGS Wed 21-May-14 10:54:00

Good post Gill

whenim64 Wed 21-May-14 11:32:56

Happy Valley would make a great series, wouldn't it?

Aka Wed 21-May-14 12:20:17

Good point Gill ... because Sarah Lancaster's acting is excellent, I tend to forget that the supporting actors are also wonderful and deserve credit too.

A big improvement in some of the wooden tops we've seen recently such as David Tennent shock

bikergran Wed 21-May-14 12:28:18

oh yes loved last Tango as well..also we are not too far away from Halifax..so could relate to it.

Bez Wed 21-May-14 13:00:44

I have found it to be one of the best things on TV but this last winter there have been a couple of good detective series - Hinterland being another. Sarah Lancashire is always excellent and such a different character to those in Last Tango and The Paradise.

petallus Wed 21-May-14 18:21:54

I take back my previous post where I said I fast-forwarded through the episodes because it was tediously over the top.

Just watched episode 4 and it was so gripping I could hardly breath. I did fast forward but only to avoid seeing Sarah Lancaster being beaten up in the cellar.

Interesting that two of the main actors starred in Benedorm!

Tegan Wed 21-May-14 19:12:19

I started watching it and agree that Sarah Lancashire was very good. But didn't watch the second episode. I know I watch all the scandinoir stuff so I should be immune now but I just found I couldn't cope with another programme where a woman as being raped/abused [murdered even?] by a man. Did anyone watch last Saturdays Wallander by the way? Was looking forward to it but found it boring.

petallus Wed 21-May-14 19:38:43

Loved Wallander. Thought it was better than previous episodes I have seen.

Oldgreymare Thu 22-May-14 09:00:27

Fantastic serial, so well written. Sarah Lancashire is a gem AND she is never splashed across the pages of glitzy gossip mags.
Tried to watch the 'new' Wallender Tegan, but dropped off..... oh dear!

KatyK Thu 22-May-14 10:12:15

I thought Happy Valley was brilliant.
