BBC3 or 4 to close?

Rumours that the Beeb are going to close one of them. Feel pretty upset about this as I tend to watch them far more than BBC1 or 2. They've already stopped showing my sport of choice, racing, and now this. I would assume that BBC3 will go; I watch that less but it is at the forefront of good new comedy programmes such as Bad Education. BBC4 is full of repeats and archive material programmes anyway, so why does it cost so much to run? And they introduced us to Wallander and The Killing. Is this discrimination against people that are happy to watch programmes with subtitles on a Saturday night hmm. At least they didn't stop Radio6 when they planned to and that is going from strength to strength now. One of the joys of being retired is being able to stay up and watch BBC4 sad. Might as well go backto work. Oops can't; they've closed my dispensary/surgery down.

I've not heard about this but my choice would be to keep BBC4 for the same reasons as you, Saturday night at 9pm. We do watch other programmes on that channel but never turn to BBC3 at all. I hope the rumours are wrong...

Hmm, perhaps as licence fee payers we should adopt the sort of "he who pays the piper calls the tune" attitude, but it probably wouldn't get us very far!

I've been reading about web activism today and am ready for a fight so perhaps we could start a FB or Twitter campaign and demand they listen to us?

Marelli Mon 03-Mar-14 18:56:53

We'd be lost without BBC4 on a Saturday...shock!

KatyK Mon 03-Mar-14 19:05:39

I love BBC4 sad

I would really miss BBC4

annodomini Mon 03-Mar-14 19:19:41

BBC4 - Today; Woman's Hour; the Archers; From Our Own Correspondent; The Now Show; The News Quiz; I'm Sorry I haven't a clue... etc ... No, they can't take this station off the air.

anno I think you may be confuddled, it's not Radio 4, but BBC 4 the tv channel

Ana Mon 03-Mar-14 19:22:27

Not the radio station, anno. BBC 4.

annodomini Mon 03-Mar-14 19:39:03

'Confuddled' sums me up. Apologies to all. OK. I would miss BBC4 too. Some of the history and archaeology programmes are unmissable, though they do tend to be repeated not too long after their first showing.

Tegan Mon 03-Mar-14 19:49:09

Usually a few hours after they've been shown. Which is great because I tend to nod off half way through the first showing then wake up to watch the second half when it's repeated in the early hours of the morning.

Where did you come across the rumors Tegan ?

When the Beeb were considering closing down Radio 6 Music, there was such an uproar that they reconsidered it.

Tegan Mon 03-Mar-14 20:43:53

It was on the AOL news bit when I turned on the pooter. Thank goodness I hadn't started listening to R6 when they tried to shut it down; I'd be devastated now if they did. R6 and BBC4 are my favourite things [along with Channel 4 Racing]. Crikey; I don't ask for much in life but, in a week when they shut down our village surgery and then our Post Office is threatened with closure, BBC4 would be the final straw sad. Heaven forbid that Gransnet is ever under threat!

NanKate Mon 03-Mar-14 20:49:55

Radio 6 is new to me. What sort of programmes do they have ? Can't find it in my local newspaper.

merlotgran Mon 03-Mar-14 20:57:17

It's in the Daily Mail so it must be true! grin

Culag Mon 03-Mar-14 21:00:14

Radio 6 music is a DAB channel only I think.
Cerys Mathews on a Sunday morning has a very eclectic mix of music. I listen to it instead of The Archers!

Ana Mon 03-Mar-14 21:00:31

Oh, that's all right then. Panic over! hmm

Ana Mon 03-Mar-14 21:01:10

(in reply to merlot, not you, Culag!)

Culag Mon 03-Mar-14 21:06:05

I would axe BBC 3. I've never watched it. I would hate to lose 2 or 4. Come to think of it I very rarely watch BBC1 either!

Lilygran Mon 03-Mar-14 21:36:15

We watch BBC 4 much more than the other channels. 1 has been quite dumbed down and 3 always was dumb.

Tegan Mon 03-Mar-14 22:34:37

The only show I would have watched on BBC2 tonight would have been The Culture Show but it coincided with the BBC4 programme about animals sleep patterns which was on at the same time [I've been looking forward to that programme all day]. I'll watch the Culture Show on iplayer. And catch up with the programme about architecture on BBC4 early tomorrow morning. I mean, how can they drop a programe that shows Priscilla the octopus opening a jar to get her dinner confused?

by the way if anyone watched the animals sleeping programme they mentioned about sperm whales sleeping and said it had only recently been discovered; but I have it on video from years back. Given that I've got boxes and boxes of videos I wouldn't know where to find it but here it is [hopefully] on utube. I was amazed when I saw it for the first time.

Bez Mon 03-Mar-14 22:42:11

Which one is Montalbano on? That is the one I would vote to keep!!

Tegan Mon 03-Mar-14 22:44:09

BBC4
