having looked forward to the new series [a bit of light relief] found myself rather bored after 15 mins. It does seem like the same subjects gone over again and again.glad that the thin ginger haired manager has got his comeuppance now that his wife has had lots of children [LOTS]Ha-ha serve him right.Maybe the series will pick up and be more interesting next week.Am seriously missing Downton!

I too was a bit disappointed. I think I prefer 'The Paradise' the other department store series. As you say, it was all old subjects, let us hope it improves.

I watched 2 episodes of the first Mr. Selfridge and did not like it. I have never watched Death in Paradise, I also miss Downton. There is not a lot on.

I loved Mr Selfridge!!! WW1 is about to rear its devastating head which should add to the story line. Downton is a must, and Death in Paradise? well the story line is a bit weak(!!) but I love the Island, it's scenery, and the 'Police Force', so it is looked forward to in this house!

Mr.Selfridge didn't disappoint me... but then, I'm easily pleased.

It seems as if Mr Selfridge doesn't disappoint a lot of women....... that's why his wife is so cross with him ! However, last night he was cancelling 'all' their accounts and trying to cosy up to Rose again, though she wasn't having him back [just yet.] The programme is ok, but needs a few new characters injecting a bit of interest I think.Delphine isn't all that interesting. At least Henri is back [sporting a beard; that will have to go!]
No doubt he will be helping out with the Selfridge displays before too long.
Getting a bit fed up with the Selfridge 'grin' although he does have very attractive and expensive looking teeth so I suppose he likes showing them off.

Looked up Harry Selfridge on Wikipedia and found an article from the Independent 28 Jan 2014. It would seem that in real life his womanising started when he was quite elderly, after the deaths of his wife and his mother. He died in poverty, so sad.

rosesarered Wed 29-Jan-14 12:10:13

GULP!!!! Oh poor old Harry, How come he died in poverty? One gamble too many?sad

alternativegran Wed 29-Jan-14 23:49:28

Well the Great Depression didn't help nor did the gambling and showgirls .

Although he wasn't totally faithful to her in her lifetime, he seems to have gone completely off the rails without Rose or his mother. I read somewhere that the family couldn't even afford a headstone for his grave at the end.

rosesarered I'm finding that I have developed a new game for the current series, it's called "Count the Grins" grin

Although it does rather put one off one's stroke re plot following!

rosesarered Thu 30-Jan-14 12:24:36

Oh dear Phoenix wish you hadn't said that, now I shall be counting them also! Here is one that I made earlier...... grin

Anne58 Thu 30-Jan-14 12:32:51

It's very easy to develop odd quirks like that roses grin

Mr P and I play a game when listening to Radio 4 called "name the correspondent". The newsreader says something like "a report from our media correspondent" and the first one to shout out the right name wins.

Then there is "Gardeners Question Time" bingo. This involves predicting how far into the programme the chairman, Eric Robson, will say "onward and upward"

rosesarered Thu 30-Jan-14 20:41:27

DOH! Now all that it is my head as well !!!!

Anne58 Thu 30-Jan-14 23:45:30

Sorry, but in it's own way it is quite good, harmless fun roses

OK, I admit it might also be viewed as a bit sort of "sad", but hey! it's free and has never been shown to frighten the wildlife! Unlike the game of pin the tail on the vole.

(I'll get me coat, as they used to say on another programme that very few people can now remember...........)

rosesarered Wed 05-Feb-14 20:33:14

I remember that phoenix it was The Fast Show. When one of the sketches was historical[Elizabethan] he said 'I'll get me cloak!'Which seemed even funnier.I liked that show [this week I shall be mostly eating....] and the jazz presenter.... 'mellow'.

Anne58 Wed 05-Feb-14 23:54:23

roses ..............COOL! (ironic, before anyone tries to send me to pedants corner!)

rosesarered Thu 06-Feb-14 17:53:19

Hee-hee grin wish they would re-run all the Fast Show I would like to see it again['A'm just off to sort out the drainage in the bottom field sir']ah, Ted, what a character he was, did you ever see the drinking game scene? Milord has to tell Ted that his wife has just died, so goes to the pub to find him;Ted is engaged in a drinking game with two mates, and they won't allow 'sir' to tell him anything unless he joins the game. Milord picks up a shot glass 'Ted' slurp 'your' slurp [another shot] 'wife' slurp [another shot]' has' slurp 'just' [another shot] slurp 'died'.

Ana Thu 06-Feb-14 18:09:30

Oh, I did love Ted and Ralph! Very touching, as well as very funny...

Anne58 Sun 16-Feb-14 17:31:49

Selfridges.

They don't.

Ana Sun 16-Feb-14 17:56:33

Boots don't sell boots, either!

Lona Sun 16-Feb-14 19:08:17

Superdrug?

rosesarered Tue 18-Feb-14 20:24:48

What is Henri up to hmmn? Bet it's something incredibly noble and heart warming.

rosesarered Wed 19-Mar-14 11:38:12

I am still watching Mr Selfridge [but mainly from a sense of loyalty]. feel it's lost it's razzamatazz somewhere along the way.The costumes are nice to look at, but tired of lots of the charcters now.Especially the lah-di-dah ginger haired shop assistant with her squeaky voice, Mr Grove [another ginger haired irritant] the characters seem to be more caricatures now, instead of becoming more solid as people. Rose Selfridge [the saint] Lord Loxley [the nasty bully] Lady Mae [reformed sinner] Delphine [the temptress] Henri [tortured noble soul] and so on. Why does Miss Tyler gulp so much when she speaks?Has the actress decided that this helps the London accent? Why do we never see the famous window displays anymore, are Henri and Miss tyler too busy gulping and being noble to do any work? Only Victor seems to be a good solid character, and I hope he sees off the brooding Frenchman before too long.

rosesarered Mon 24-Mar-14 11:29:52

Disaster! Agnes Towler has ditched the long suffering Victor in exchanged for Henri. As he is going off to fight for the French, she can now keep her job at Selfridges.Actually, she didn't really ditch Victor, but her brother George, in a rare moment of seriousness, told Victor that she was very loyal [which gave poor Victor the clue that there was no passion involved, and he did the gentlemanly thing and let her go.]Tears all round. The Selfridge family had a last Thanksgiving meal together, though personally I would have told my husband the following day and not just before the meal! Don't think I shall be watching the next series.

Ana Mon 24-Mar-14 11:46:39

Harry didn't seem too distraught when Rose told him, did he? hmm
