If anyone goes to see this can they please explain to me why it has had 4 star ratings and rave reviews? The S.O. and I hated it [apart from seeing Paris which we never tire of].

I rather suspect that this is not the Jean-Luc Godard film that I went to see when I was a teenager studying for French A level. I think that dates from about 1967 or 68. It was curious and interesting but somehow I could never view it as a comedy, even a black comedy.

Tegan Tue 15-Oct-13 12:30:56

That's interesting because there was a reference made to an older film; I bet it was that one. Maybe if I'd seen that I'd've understood the 'comedy' in this latest one which fell on stony ground with me.

I was going to order this on Love Film, then looked up the reviews which broadly agreed with your assessment Tegan - so I did not bother.

Marelli Tue 15-Oct-13 15:41:48

Saw the trailer for this yesterday evening when I was at the cinema to see Sunshine on Leith (which was very good, I thought). I'd fancied going to see Le Weekend - is it a bit poor, Tegan? hmm

BAnanas Tue 15-Oct-13 16:40:15

Oh don't tell me it isn't any good, I really want to see it, I'll make up my own mind when I go later this week the critics unanimously seemed to think it was good. I suspect it's going to be one of those small budget films that won't be around for long. I also quite fancy the new Tom Hanks, Captain Phillips film released any day now, but am waiting for the reviews.

I loved Sunshine on Leith Marelli. I thought it was heartwarming and funny (even if the daughter coming out of the woodwork after 24 years was all sorted out a bit too easily). I also saw the trailer for le weekend at that showing and was a bit dubious about whether I wanted to see it or not. I love Lindsay Duncan and Jim Broadbent but the trailer just didn't grab me somehow. I probably won't bother now.

Eloethan Tue 15-Oct-13 17:21:13

I was looking forward to seeing this but then read the reviews of cinemagoers (as opposed to critics) on Rotten Tomatoes. It got a fairly resounding thumbs down. The two main characters were described as selfish, self-absorbed "Little Englanders". That put me right off.

Tegan Tue 15-Oct-13 17:30:02

Oh please, I want everyone to see it!! Even the couple leaving the cinema after us were saying how much they loved it so wondered if I'd had a sense of humour bypass withou knowing it. It wa s bit like 'Another Year' [again with Jim Boradbent] but I found that much nicer. I was wondering what had happened to Lindsay Duncan a couple of weks ago, and now she keeps popping up all over the place [albeit looking much older]. I really need to discuss the things about it that are bothering me confused. I'm looking forward to Sunshine on Leith smile.

Marelli Tue 15-Oct-13 17:54:01

You'll love it, Tegan! The last scene was brilliant! smile

Tegan Tue 15-Oct-13 17:57:34

It's on in two weeks here. Going to see Blue Jasmine tomorrow.

Lona Tue 15-Oct-13 18:30:49

I'll be interested to hear what you think about BLue Jasmine tegan, I did start a thread a couple of weeks ago.

Henrietta Wed 16-Oct-13 07:52:22

You'll love 'Sunshine on Leith', it's a great film and the songs fit in with the story. Marelli is right, the last scene is terrific, and the very start is terrific too, very atmospheric. I highly recommend it.
Sorry to hear that 'Le Weekend' is not so good. I thought I might go to that.

Mishap Wed 16-Oct-13 09:36:07

Le Weekend had an excellent review in the Sunday Telegraph.

Tegan Wed 16-Oct-13 11:41:35

The only negative review is the one Eloethan refers to that was on Rotten Tomatoes, which pretty much summed up how I felt about the film. However, that was only one viewer review in a sea of red tomatoes that loved it. I so want people to tell me what they think. There's even talk of Lindsay Duncan getting an Oscar for it; I love Lindsay Duncan but, to me she always plays 'Liindsay Duncan'. I just didn't get the subtle undercurrents that were supposed to be there confused. And there were some scenes that made me quite angry angry.

Went to see Le Weekend last night and was absolutely riveted, this was due to the fact that Lindsay Duncan was wearing my coat. My clothes have never starred in a film before, this was a first for me! Some of my china popped up in Gosford Park a while back, below stairs I would stress!

Aside from the coat I did enjoy the film, I can see that it wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea though, it's quite quirky but I enjoy that genre, really liked the Mike Leigh film with Jim Broadbent in it, "Another Year" I think it was called.

gracesmum Fri 18-Oct-13 09:40:58

I have heard of people renting out their houses to film makers but never their coat! As LD is always very elegant I would be quite flattered!

BAnanas Fri 18-Oct-13 09:51:10

Gracesmum I didn't get a fee! LD is elegant and the coat looked better on her, as she is a tad slimmer than me, well a bit more than a tad if I'm honest!

Tegan Fri 18-Oct-13 10:02:23

SPOILER ALERT; SPOILER ALERT;SPOILER ALERT; SPOILER ALERT;PLEASE DON'T READ IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE FILM..........I thought Another Year was much better; Maybe Le Weekend touched a few raw nerves with me. I didn't get over seeing them drinking the contents of the drinks cabinet in the room [my head was screaming 'd'you know how much these drinks cost']. And she kept doing seductive things in front of him and I don't think people do that after 30 years. And, one minute they were kissing passionately and the next she was saying she was leaving him; it didn't ring true [I know it' just a film].

Tegan Fri 18-Oct-13 10:05:08

Someone I knew rented out their house in St Albans for filming; people go round the country looking for suitable places but no one has, thus far knocked on my door [although they did film Cathy Come Home in the street next to where I grew up].

Lona Wed 23-Oct-13 15:57:30

I've just been to see Le Weekend and I really enjoyed it.
I agree Tegan that some of her behaviour didn't ring true, but I can see that a lot of long term marriages could be like that.

Loved seeing Paris and I thought the last scene was very funny.

Tegan Wed 23-Oct-13 16:30:36

I'm glad you enjoyed it Lona, as I didn't want to put anyone off seeing it.

Lona Wed 23-Oct-13 16:50:07

smile The next one on our list is 'Philomena' with Judy Dench.

Tegan Wed 23-Oct-13 17:23:45

Yes that does look good. By the way, Judi Dench's racehorse, Smokey Oakey won his first race for ages at Brighton the other day [I bet she lives at Brighton]. He's needed soft ground in his races and finally got it. Everyone is well chuffed when Dame Judi wins a race smile.

Carolann25 Fri 29-Nov-13 16:05:08

I love Dame Judi,I read somewhere that she has a lovely gentleman friend, they met when she was at a village fete.
