I think this is the first time ever. I feel quite overcome. About time.
Go for it Mishal Hussain and good luck in your new job.

Janet Yellen

Agreed and now the first woman ever to head up the US Federal Bank.

Aka Thu 10-Oct-13 07:35:14

Federal Reserve.

What did I say the other day, about women running the world for the next ten years, its happening, slowly but its there. smile

JessM Thu 10-Oct-13 08:08:30

I wouldn't quite go that far berdie - suggest you take a look at the composition of pretty much any government, or parliament, anywhere in the world. Most will be predominantly male. Some will be exclusively male. Let us know if you find any where women are in the majority of senior posts, or of representatives.
Same goes for the boards of large companies.
On a brighter note, the female scientist from Leicester was very clear I thought on that very Today programme, re her groundbreaking brain research.

Aka Thu 10-Oct-13 08:16:49

Why only the next ten years Berdie?

Aka Thu 10-Oct-13 08:17:45

I missed that programme Jess must try to catch up in it,

berdie Thu 10-Oct-13 09:01:44

Sorry not just the next ten years, keep hammering at that glass ceiling you'll get through, because most of the women I talk to have better ideas on the NHS, education, wars etc.smile

See link for information on :During October 2013 the BBC's 100 Women season will seek to shine a light on life for women in the 21st Century

Although in a way it's a shame that we consider it newsworthy.

albertine Thu 10-Oct-13 18:20:46

O.K. then.
Plan A for better female representation in the media.
* Today programme 3 men and 3 women when J.Humphrys retires.
* Any Questions and Question Time - equal numbers of men and women, ditto University Challenge, Have I Got News for You, Q I, Only Connect and Mastermind. Yes I know its a quota but it would be fair.
* More older women on news and current affairs programmes and I don't mean 40 year olds ! How about 60 year olds who are there for their expertise rather than their looks.

It would be a start
Any other ideas ?

JessM Thu 10-Oct-13 18:49:26

Agree absolutely re the tedious boys club on those comedy/quiz formats.
gardener's question time got more equal a couple of years back.
The beeb are so keen to get "balance" of opinion (to the extent where every time they talk about something like smoking and health they feel obliged to drag out (pun!) the tired old pro-smokers group.
How about don't let Stephanie leave (economics correspondent)

Ana Thu 10-Oct-13 18:52:05

That sounds a bit menacing, Jess! She wants to leave...

Iam64 Fri 11-Oct-13 07:28:23

I listened to the Today programme whilst driving to work - it was great. At last Beeb - it's been a long time arriving hasn't it.

LizG Fri 11-Oct-13 08:03:57

Agree with you phoenix pity it was so noticeable! Though hopefully first programme of many.

JessM Fri 11-Oct-13 08:15:27

Joke ana ... but I'd have offered her a fortune to stay grin

albertine Fri 11-Oct-13 10:18:11

Hi again
Guess what ? I saw Question Time last night ( it is on at the moment on BBC 2 ). 3 women, 2 men ( 1 gay ) ! Was Tony Hall reading gransnet ?
As you have said , it's a shame that it seems so novel but hopefully it will become the norm. can you imagine an all female Mock the Week or Buzzcocks - no nor can I !

JessM Fri 11-Oct-13 15:23:32

An all female science programme. A gran can dream.
Must listen to ANy Questions tonight and see if it is a concerted effort to get their act together.
Like your name albertine - is it after the rose?

albertine Fri 11-Oct-13 16:44:57

Yes my user name is after the rose. Pink, a bit blowsy, fading gently! Or maybe rambling, prickly and difficult to keep under control ? Not for me to say, really.
How about an all female panel of women giving their opinions, oh hang on - Loose Women - hmmm..........

JessM Fri 11-Oct-13 16:54:35

Gorgeous rose. A bit like New Dawn only more so. Hope that you bloom for longer than it does.
Here's a real feminist fantasy. Are you ready? braced?
:
Equal coverage of men's and women's sport on TV.

albertine Fri 11-Oct-13 18:30:29

Now we really are in la la land. There's 'ladies' tennis once a year at Wimbledon, what more do you want ?

JessM Fri 11-Oct-13 19:07:45

In the S hemisphere they take their netball very seriously. Men watch women's netball on TV. Pretty rough game.
I just wish they would stop referring to females in sport as girls or ladies. That would be a start.
Have you spotted the "lesbian" ad for HSBC bank? Blink and you'll miss it. A rewind moment.

albertine Sat 12-Oct-13 18:45:47

I have just seen the gay couple in the Nat West ad - good for them. I bet the creatives doing the ad agonised about it though.
Do you know the older I get the more I notice the injustices of the status quo. I can't understand it when women say 'I am not a feminist but....'
I don't want females to take over the world but if we had real representation in the media it would soon become normal.

So now I think 'long live the old bat tendency' - fight sexism, racism and ageism. Go Grans Go !

JessM Sat 12-Oct-13 19:04:35

Yes it is done with a very light touch isn't it. the ad.
It is frustrating to see after all this time that feminism has made relatively little progress in some areas.

sigh hmm
