sad news

He was such a part of our young days. sad

David Jacobs was featured in 'Last Word' this afternoon on Radio 4.
I didn't realise his last programme had been transmitted as recently as last month. They played the last part of the recording - he sounded dreadfully frail and he signed off saying , "Well, I'll be here next week... or whenever." - very poignant, listening to it now.

Pete(r) Murray is still with us, and is 87!

AlieOxon Fri 06-Sept-13 18:17:42

feetle you better tell Radio 4 they didn't know everything....

Ana Fri 06-Sept-13 18:14:34

I was thinking about Pete Murray too - he was another one who always seemed rather awkward and old-fashioned in the 60s.

merlotgran Fri 06-Sept-13 18:11:04

Is he still alive?

j08 Fri 06-Sept-13 18:08:36

Wonder what Pete Murray's doing these days.

harrigran Fri 06-Sept-13 17:55:51

I had a relative who worked for David Jacobs and she said he was a perfect gentleman. We used to get signed photographs and I found one just recently, he was posing with a cigarette in his hand hmm

feetlebaum Fri 06-Sept-13 17:27:12

A lot but not all! For example Alfie Bass and David Kossoff both played Lemmy at one time or another. Andrew Faulds was Jet Moprgan, and Guy Kingsley Poynter was Doc.

Re David Jacobs, I just discovered (from Radio 4 in the car) that he did ALL the voices for 'Journey into Space'!............

What about rinsing your hair with beer to give it volume. When the blood transfusion service came to collect blood from students, there was a contest between halls of residence to see which could provide the highest percentage of donors. We won - with much arm twisting - and the prize was a case of McEwan's Export. And yes, some of us enjoyed drinking it but quite a lot of it was wasted on hair washing.

The things we did grin

Penstemmon Fri 06-Sept-13 14:48:35

KatyK did that too and ironed my hair (covered it with brown paper!!)

KatyK Fri 06-Sept-13 14:08:52

Deedaa I bet you looked fabulous! I can remember going to bed with the sides of my hair sellotaped to my face to try to get kiss-curls (think Lulu in
To Sir With love) and sellotaping my unruly curled up fringe to my forehead.
We used to get hair spray which was liquid and came in tubes which we then
poured into a squeezy bottle to spray. It made your hair feel like a brillo pad.
Happy days !

Deedaa Thu 05-Sept-13 22:42:41

KatyK you should have seen me when when the Afro came in! I used to spend hours turning it into a massive frizz with the curling tongs. They were the ones you heated up on the gas so there was always a lovely smell of singed hair grin I would complete the look with scarlet lipstick and rust coloured eyeshadow from Biba. Wish I had the nerve today! (Or the figure!)

KatyK Thu 05-Sept-13 13:53:27

Deedaa I would have been so jealous of your Cathy McGowan hair. Like you I did manage the clothes though. My hair has always been dreadful. I can remember going with my friend for the 'Mary Quant' style. My friend had lovely thick hair and the style looked wonderful on her. When it was my turn the stylist said 'well I can try'. envy

DM is amazing on NCIS isn't he j08 - it must be such hard work filming 26 episodes like they do. ANd then they start again. Great role for him.

feetlebaum Thu 05-Sept-13 12:09:56

@zengran - I remember David McCallum senior - a leading orchestral violinist, and a thrifty Scot - he would turn up for a recording session on a push-bike, with exactly the right change for a cup of tea in the break in his pocket...

j08 Thu 05-Sept-13 11:08:26

Thanks! grin

Lona Thu 05-Sept-13 10:56:30

Channel 5 jings, lots of eye candy in it! wink

j08 Thu 05-Sept-13 10:14:31

Wow! Is that on Sky? (haven't got it sad)

Zengran Thu 05-Sept-13 10:09:19

j08 I still get a regular fix of David McCallum by watching NCIS !! grin

Deedah I had a pair of bottle green leather low-heeled loafers designed by Cathy McGowan. I loved them! They cost £7.19s.11d, which was practically all my week's wages at the time, and were the envy of my friends. I went dancing in them, with my maxi leather coat, black polo sweater and pin-striped mini-skirt. How cool was I? grin

whenim64 Wed 04-Sept-13 22:34:10

Ahem.....! I love 'I Don't Like Mondays' and think it has a great melody. blush

merlotgran Wed 04-Sept-13 22:29:44

I wouldn't call that tuneless warble, 'I Don't Like Mondays' memorable.

Eloethan Wed 04-Sept-13 22:24:37

feetlebaum I'm with you - Karen Carpenter had the most gloriously rich and effortlessly smooth voice. And what else has Bob Geldorf done that is memorable, other than "I don't like Mondays"?
