It certainly is a long way but worth it. We like Kirkcudbright. It's been, and to an extent remains, an artists town. I can see why artists are attracted there. There's something about the quality of the light.
Portpatrick is lovely too but a lot further on. We sometimes stay at a gorgeous hotel nearby and can see the lights of Northern Ireland from the bay window in the dining room.
It all feels a world apart from the rest of Scotland.

I am an expat Scot living in Staffordshire.
I visit Scotland regularly to visit relatives but that means I see people rather than places.
I know Glasgow (birth place) and Edinburgh quite well.
I'm familiar with Helensburgh, Stirling, The Trossachs, Loch Lomand and surrounding areas.
As I have a hankering to do some exploring , DH has been trying to sort out where to go and what type of transport, car, motorhome (would need to hire) or an other alternative coach trip starting in Glasgow but this is my least favourite idea as not flexible.
Then comes the issue of where to stay (once we are out of rellie range
)
Caravan sites, B&B or hotels.
I would love to go to John O Groats and Caithness as this is where my maternal grandfather is from.
Also Fort William.
On the other hand would it better to stay on the west coast Lowlsnds going over to Arran, Dunoon, Mull of Kintyre perhaps Oban and Tarbet.
Saving the North for another year?
We had said we would go this year but found it difficult to agree on a plan so it never happened.
Would like to make it happen in 2018
Advice, local knowledge and past experiences from my trusty GN pals would be very welcome.also might help with DH tearing
his hair out!
