Well I have officially joined the big knicker brigade. I never thought I would but needs must, and I got fed up of constantly putting my hands down my trousers to haul up my briefs blush.
Anyway I did a bit of research, and found some on Amazon with great reviews...and I'm converted ladies. These are made from a good quality cotton (quite thick) with a little lycra for comfort, also with a very deep 2 inch waistband.
They were £18.99 plus postage for a 4 pack. I love them, so just wanted to share with you ?. Now everyone knows what underwear I will have on...oops blush

Ellen....I've often talked about 'all is safely gathered in' pants but hadn't heard the term 'harvest festival' knickers. ?

Theoddbird Mon 15-Jul-19 11:43:38

I buy my knickers from Marks & Spencer. Proper knickers....very pretty with lace. 3 pairs for ever bra. Do like knickers to come up to my waist. smile

I can't wear bikini briefs with trousers - the side seams always seem itchy and scratchy so I have about half a dozen pairs of 'trouser knickers' - silky fabric and waist high that save me from a lot of wriggling about in discomfort. Otherwise I do like high leg bikini style. The things we tell each other on this site - my mother would have apoplexy!

I to have now opted for big knickers,I wear Sloggis they don't have VPL either. Our school knickers were navy blue, very thick and hot, they were supposed to protect you modesty when wearing divided skirts for sports!

Never in my younger days was it for comfort more what was in fashion. My favourites were the all in one 'teddy'. Especially those in 'silk'
Now its a pack of Tesco's cotton briefs.

Perhaps we went to the same school!

You were meant to keep a hankie in the pocket, but by the late 1950s I think most teachers would have bitten our heads off, if we had dived into our top pants during class!

AlisonKF Mon 15-Jul-19 12:16:17

Indeed the pocket was for a hankie, but also these knickers were called gym. knickers and were worn for indoor gym. As well as outdoor hockey, along with the official square necked blouse. Hideous, freezing. It would have been impossibly embarrassing to tell the games teacher about a period so we struggled on through discomfort and pain. I could not insert a tampon until I was 16. I left school in 1955.

I sent a Dorset colleague to stay with my daughter in London, who was going to provide her with bed and breakfast for £25. Much cheaper than anywhere else! When time came for her to leave, she pulled up her skirt and took the money out of a pocket in her knickers!!! Not sure where you can get pocketed knickers for adults...

Bliss, I love big knickers, usually buy Sloggies, claimed to be the most comfortable knickers in the world. They don't look enormous on the washing line either.

GabriellaG54 Mon 15-Jul-19 12:44:53

I can't believe it sandelf
I was at Waterloo Park from 1956-61.

sarahanew Mon 15-Jul-19 13:27:37

Welcome to the big knicker brigade. Comfort and no visable panty line, takes until our age to realise the benefits. No going back to thongs now if you paid me!

petra Mon 15-Jul-19 13:42:59

Yorkshiregirl
I think they would look more attractive if you had ironed them.
Sorry if I've offended anyone using the 'iron' word.?

Photocrazy Mon 15-Jul-19 14:34:26

I vote for big knickers - Sloggis for me every time in black or white, so comfy, don't want to wear any others.
Welcome to the gang.

onaclearday Mon 15-Jul-19 14:57:01

Sorry, all you sloggis fans. I go to an exercise class and can always spot the sloggis wearers by the VPL. Under trousers I wear Debenhams 'invisible' knickers in black or nude. They come right up to the waist and are most comfortable, like a second skin.

Callistemon Mon 15-Jul-19 15:14:38

Nude is the only colour that doesn't show through white trousers!

Adelphi Mon 15-Jul-19 15:22:09

I find mostly no kecks is best, but when out and about the thinnest of cotton. I found the big heavy cotton ones didn’t wick well enough!

olliebeak Mon 15-Jul-19 16:47:49

Join the club, Yorkshiregirl :-)! How on earth today's 'bright young things' can wear those bits of string that pass for underwear is totally beyond me ;-). Lully - I'm another who had to wear the bottle green knickers with a pocket ................... we were informed that the pocket was for a hankie, in case it was needed during PE lessons :-o ;-). I went to Cowley Girls' Grammar School in St.Helens.

M0nica Mon 15-Jul-19 16:54:50

As I am quite narrow between waist and crutch, the average big knicker, going on the photo, would be an uncomfortable fit under the armpits.

I have enough trouble finding jeans and other trousers that end somewhere near my waist, rather than at bra level, without having knickers that 2 straps could turn into a swimming costume.

mokryna Mon 15-Jul-19 17:28:45

We had to wear bottle green knickers for school, take off the white blouse, green and red school tie and bottle green gymslip, bodice and you were ready for gym!
Nowadays tanga Sloggis, the cotton ones, not though for day wear (the material of the online ones I bought are horrible), and then to bed with M&S, they never wear out!

mokryna Mon 15-Jul-19 17:30:00

for day wear

Grannyguitar Mon 15-Jul-19 19:04:25

When I was at an all-girls junior school, our rather plump teacher was always hoicking up her skirts to reach her handkerchief. After I had left, it became co-educational, and she apparently had to be told to stop as it was too distracting for the boys!

annep1 Mon 15-Jul-19 19:21:46

I would rather see the vpl of sloggis than that of briegs that form the tiniest v to your waist -especially under thin leggings with a short top!

MissAdventure Mon 15-Jul-19 19:50:19

I'm quite a fan of the vpl, I think it can be rather attractive, as it just hints at what may be beneath.

annep1 Mon 15-Jul-19 20:24:36

Typo - briefs!.

it just hints at what may be beneath
Often little is left to the imagination.

MissAdventure Mon 15-Jul-19 20:33:29

Oh yes, I don't like to see that!
Some of the tight dresses today look like the person is practically naked!
