Grey longer hair

Is there anyone lose who has longer greying hair? It is thick and fine. Like the length but if I am not feeling 100 per cent think it ages me. Don't want to start colouring it as it grows overnight and don't want the bother of sitting in a salon for hours every month, wondered about having it blunt cut into layers, ideas. really after best styles for my type of hair, at present it is just a longish straight Bob!

I have long grey hair now, but if I wear it loose I look like a witch, so I wear it up twisted with a variety of fancy clips. I used to always have short hair but I was forever washing it and having to deal with it during the day, I find long hair easier, I can just whizz it up and forget about it.
It really only needs washing once or twice a week which I am sure is better for me and better for the environment.
I get the ends trimmed occasionally so it is not a financial drain on my money either.

If my short cut gets overgrown I look unkempt and possibly a bit crazy imho. My always more beautiful and elegant cousin however has long grey hair and always looks great. Whether casually pulled back or loosely put up it just suits her perfectly.
In short - it depends upon the hair, the person and their personality. Try it and see what you think!

I think the key is in the condition and thickness of grey hair. I love the thick plaits, they look beautiful.
Mine looks like catweasel!

grandtanteJE65 Like you I used to have really thick hair which I could wear long. I am 69 now and it’s much thinner and straggly so needs to be kept fairly short. One hairdresser refused to do this insisting, on cutting it into a bob - which lasted a couple of weeks of having to style it every day before I went to a different hairdresser and had layers put in. Sadly hair does change as you get older and I think you have to decide what best suits your hair and your face and colouring. I still have some highlights put in but am considering letting myself go grey naturally.

I have had long hair for many years and find it easy to manage,I use the same home hair colourant every 3 mths to keep the pale blonde colour you cannot notice the regrowth when it comes through now as it must be all going grey.
I can pile it up on top with a large bulldog clip or plait it down my back or ponytail it when being lazy I have always kept my hair waist length having a couple of good trims during the year .

OldMeg that is so not a good look! Had to Google him as not a viewer of said series. Guffawing here!

My hair is now half way between a short layered style and a bob. Trying to get it well cut as i grow the layers out. I was told recently that I looked like Theresa May which did not please me as I'm not a fan!

Your choice and as you say, no rules.
How ever having recently observed a picture of Helen Mirren ,with her short style and she must be over 70 but looks much younger, I know what I would chose for a guess my age style.

Several years ago, when I was in my fifties, I met a woman at a party who was also in her fifties. She had the most fantastic hair which came down to her ankles. The cut was good, the condition excellent and it was still nice and thick. and her new husband loved it! However, while she could pull this off, I don't think we all can.smile

Long grey hair worn loose is ageing I think, my hair is now a silver colour which my hairdresser always admires ( a kind person) I have it cut short which is easy to manage, but it needs a trim ever four or five weeks, beats having to have it coloured, and cost a fortune. Each to his own.

I dye my grey hair metalic silver...I love the dyed grey look popular at the moment. I have it short though...my hair has never grown longer than my shoulders even when young.

IMHO I think long grey hair is ageing and inelegant, unless it is swept up in some style or other. frankly if it is worn loose it only looks good if it is thick, well groomed. Depends on face shape too.

Colourwise it depends on the skin tones. I am lucky in that, having given up highlights a few years ago, my now natural colour is being complimented, and it is slowly turning a pretty grey and not pepper and salt and suits my skin tone. As it is getting thinner I am having it trimmed a bit shorter every two months, and layered. Looking as good as it can with older age. I hope.

My hair is grey so I wear it short. Have it cut every 5 weeks my hairdresser cuts hair brillently.

I have been growing my golden blonde colour out as my hair has thinned since having an underactive thyroid because I thought colouring would make it worse. I am now white except for the very ends which are blondish. But my hair has always been short. My husband isn't keen although he also has white hair. I think long grey hair us lovely as long as it is not just hanging round your face or like a friend the other day parted in the middle then plaited. Not a good look. But in a chignon or styled away from the face grey hair looks fabulous

luluaugust Sun 07-Jan-18 12:54:37

My hair is still darkish with silver highlights so I just leave it and have a short cut. I found that hairdressers always wanted to introduce yellow tones in which I have never had so gave up colouring.

Grannyanna12345 Sun 07-Jan-18 13:17:28

My hair is still quite dark with just some grey showing through at the sides - my mum’s was like that too and looked lovely. I’ve never been able to wear it short as it’s so thin it just looks boring - no matter what I put on it - so I get a good cut, and recently I had it cut shorter at the back and long at the sides and I really like it. If I look like a witch that’s too bad!

OldMeg Sun 07-Jan-18 13:21:02

Grannyado I think we have the same sense of humour wink

All you ladies who have long thick hair of whatever colour are , like Luckylegs, so fortunate. I am 86 and my hair is thin and short. If I still had thick strong hair I'd have it long and looped up in a graceful loose chignon. What matters is the strength and thickness of the hair and the image you want to project.

Marieeliz Sun 07-Jan-18 13:44:16

I must be lucky my hair is still its natural colour golden blonde. I am 79 it must be in the genes, my Mum had Auburn hair and still had the colour, a little faded, when she was 98! Sadly the genes will not be passed on as my family has died out on all sides.

I did have it really short until about 2 years ago but I have now grown it to an ear length bob. Although I have only half a thyroid it does not seem to have thinned. I have a really great hair dresser and have a cut every four weeks and occasionally get copper highlights.

pollyperkins Sun 07-Jan-18 13:48:01

Mine is thick and strong. Ive always found it difficult to manage long though. Tends to stick out when long or stand on end when short! We always think other people's hair is better!

Clarecrip1 Sun 07-Jan-18 14:00:08

I’m very proud of my grey hairs! I’m 62, rapidly approaching 63, and I am delighted that I finally have a few good grey streaks. I have long hair, usually worn loose, and I can see no reason why I should change it at all. I intend letting my naturally changing colour do it’s own thing, I’m just going to enjoy the change.

Auntieflo Sun 07-Jan-18 14:01:22

Please, just don't do the Mary Beard look !

IngeJones Sun 07-Jan-18 14:07:33

I am a Mary Beard fan, let's rock her look! :P

mimiro Sun 07-Jan-18 14:12:42

long to waist hair ,always been fine but have lots of it/from ears forward is pure white now(was a blonde til late 30's)back is very dark almost black, when braided have a black braid and white sideparted fringe, recieve compliments all the time.and i do take advantage of white and dye or chalk it purple or turquise/have dark skin.

lemongrove Sun 07-Jan-18 14:17:57

Hair styles all depend on looks, IMHO.
