The Israeli election, will Netanyahu stay in power?

The polls are saying it's going to be a very tight election but I am hoping that Netanyahu loses and there is a proper, full investigation into what the Israeli government knew prior to 7/10. It seems that a lot of Israelis also want to know. The clip below is very short.

I have a depressing feeling that he is going to win. His promise of expansion into West Bank is an attractive proposition to many Israelis.

There also needs to be a full and proper investigation into allegations of corruption.

I fear you are right. We have family in Israel and they hate Netanyahu but a lot of Israelis live in a bubble created by the government where they are fed by fear and hatred. Sadly I think they will feel they have no choice at the ballot.

How can the displacement at best, murder at worse of Palestinians living on the West Bank be an attractive proposition to many Israelis?

That won't happen if Netanyahu retains power.

You’d be surprised how people can turn a blind eye.

Propaganda must be working overtime then Cossy because as as well as what's happening on the West Bank, there's also the genocide being committed in Gaza.

If Eisenkot gets in there will be more of a diplomatic approach to ending the war both in Gaza and Iran but he doesn't favour a two state solution either, so I'm not sure where that leaves the Palestinians.

There is a section of orthodox Jews in Israel that give their life to prayer.

They have never been called up to join the IDF but Netanyahu has done that now and there is strong opposition by an ever growing number of these Jews who say they don't want their young men tainted by joining the IDF.

More problems for Netanyahu and resentment from the general population who feel these Jews to be entitled to not work and not serve.

This is a good piece about Eisenkot.

Whatever happens ethnic cleansing is going to continue. A terrible stain on Israel.

I guess unless you actually live there you wouldn’t know how the people think and whether they would still vote for him. Same applies to Trump - I suspect they both have a number of rusted on supporters.

Sadly, I agree with you.

The only country with any leverage as far as Israel is concerned is the US, which bankrolls the country enough for Israel to have listened in the past when presidents threatened to withdraw their largesse.
But Trump is a gift to Netanyahu, not only has he done nothing to tackle him on any issue he has actively supported him in entering into the Iran war.
Until the US threatens to stop bankrolling Israel the present situation will continue.
Trump needs to stop badmouthing Zelensky and to start weighing into Netanyahu.
But he won’t.

LemonJam Sun 25-Oct-26 13:15:56

From an outsiders perspective I hope he doesn't win for obvious reasons - but also think it will be a tight run election.

Only Israel citizens can decide.

AGAA4 Sun 25-Oct-26 13:44:59

It doesn't look as though anyone will have an outright win.
Netanyahu had to persuade another party to make up the numbers in the last election.
I'm hoping he will get even less votes this time.

It’s appalling.

It said on the news that it can generally take months to hammer out a coalition due to the complex system.

Well, Eisenkot has to be better - but it depends on how much support there is in the Knesset on detailed policies, the flavour of its make up.

AGAA4 Sun 25-Oct-26 14:18:24

There are a lot of parties taking part. Need to get Netanyahu's Lukid party out.
Hopefully no more extreme right parties get in.

LemonJam Sun 25-Oct-26 14:48:25

Hopefully no extreme party wins a majority. There may be a coalition government that forms. If that is the case I hope to reigns in power sufficiently to stop current actions and stop genocide in Gaza.

You would hope wouldn’t you, but that is very unlikely given the candidates.

I have to hope as the killing needs to stop.
