I believe mainly from Eritrea and Sudan.
Be interesting to see how many migrant supporters on here offer to take them into their homes!
If it’s the same as Ukrainian scheme you will get paid about £380 a month.
Getting ready for the usual excuses - haven’t got a spare room, can’t afford it, I live in a flat, I am too old, my second cousin twice removed lives with me etc etc. 🤣
It’s def twaddle I agree.
The measure of success of the proposed scheme will not specifically be how many Gransnet posters put themselves forward to offer residence in their own homes.
Generally Gransnet posters may be of an older demographic, may be more risk averse as a result, may have health issues, may be on an NHS waiting list for surgery, more likely to live alone, more likely not be working, so more likely have reduced income so may not be able to afford the additional costs to their household by taking a refugee into their home.
Many Granset posters may offer support for refugees, in a different way via local volunteer activity- e.g. helping them speak English, cookery lessons for typical English dishes etc to demonstrate active support for refugees.
One scheme is not exclusive of other schemes.
The measure of whether a Gransnet views this scheme as positive is not measured by their willingness to be first on the list to offer. residence in their own homes and be judged poorly by other posters if they do not do so. Neither does any Granset poster need to justify their choice on this matter.
The Government, society and individuals choose how they behave towards asylum seekers and refugees. There is a continuum from one end- tolerance, compassion, empathy and active support and voting for a government at a GE that wishes to meet the Uk's legal obligations as set out in the 1951 Human Convention. The opposite end of the spectrum features hatred, antipathy a 'get them all out and/or stopping them coming in the first place' rhetoric and voting for a party at the next GE that is supportive of that rhetoric and a variety of views in between the 2 ends of the continuum. We get policy in line with what we vote for and currently the LP is in government and this is their proposed scheme.
