Keir’s farewell

I was struck by the mutual respect, even affection in the tribute by Kemi Badenoch and the good humour in the exchanges between her and the Prime Minister.
The Commons at its best!

I found it very touching and felt like crying when he left.So pleased that it was all good humoured across the House

Well they all know they could be next for the chop. It is a bear pit.

I always thought that Kemi and Keir were actually quite friendly with each other outside of Parliament. I’d watched them walk in together a few times on tv and you could just tell they liked each other. It is all a bit of a pantomime and show, Parliament. Nothing is as it seems.

I still haven’t watched it properly; I knew I’d get pretty emotional if I watched it live. History will treat him far more kindly than his own party has. Tony Benn once told me that he and Margaret Thatcher had a mutual respect for each other and I think that applies to most politicians. Jess Phillips always seemed get on really well with Rees Mogg.

And it looks like Rachel Reeves is going with him.

Shabana Mahmood is heavily tipped to get the Chancellor job.

Personally, I'd settle for The Man In The Moon or anyone, really, who doesn't have a barely suppressed hatred of pensioners as demonstrated by Rachel From Accounts......

At least she doesn’t have a barely suppressed hatred of football fans #justsaying

Criticising policy is fair. Claiming someone has a "barely suppressed hatred" of an entire group is mind-reading, not evidence. Let's stick to what she's actually done.

Calendargirl Thu 16-Jul-26 06:20:16

I thought Rachel looked quite teary, whether for herself or her boss, I’m not sure.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 16-Jul-26 06:53:04

I imagine they are all friendly in the HoP, it’s just PMQ’s which has become a farce.

Where did that come from?

Please don’t call her that. It does sound rather silly and demeaning.

I think Kemi often displays emotional intelligence which we don't usually see in politicians.
Yesterday she appeared to understand the feelings of KS and showed him personal warmth.

I agree.

I do think she is becoming a credible leader of the Conservatives.

I am sorry to see Keir Starmer leave. The vultures circled and he had no chance against them.

MaizieD Thu 16-Jul-26 08:25:05

At one level I’m not sorry to see Starmer leave the post of PM (I assume he continues to be an MP?) because he was making Labour unelectable, but at an other level I feel sorry for him as a fundamentally well intentioned person who aimed too high.

Shabana Mahmood appalls me as much as Reeves did. Expect more bashing of the poor, more smarming to the finance industry and more austerity…

I just think so many of the LP had their knives out for KS tgat some of the back slapping and cheering seemed disingenuous really. Maybe suddenly some felt emotional because they felt a tad guilty?

Either that or they were clapping because he IS leaving.🤔

Cossy Thu 16-Jul-26 09:48:30

I’ll be quite glad to see the back of RR and I’m a LP supporter.

However, I’d be equally glad to see the back of some of the “goady” and frankly “spiteful” comments on her about her.

Perhaps we should remember how well these people have actually done to get into these positions in the first place.

I don’t like Johnson, or Farage or lots of public servants, but I do have a grudging respect for them getting where they have in the first instance.

IMO, RR simply wasn’t a good chancellor.

Your comment P, made me laugh out loud! 🤣🤣

FGT

I think it was just a sign of respect, I’m sure there’s lots of people in any cabinet and opposition who actually quite like each other as people, but oppose the things they say and do in their day jobs.

Chocolatelovinggran Thu 16-Jul-26 09:53:36

I saw only dignity and mutual respect.
And yes, I agree with you, Ladyleftfieldlover, I dislike " Rachel from Accounts'.

AGAA4 Thu 16-Jul-26 09:57:05

I agree Cossy. They must understand how bad KS must be feeling and it would be heartless to clap for any other reason.

Only they know though. 😉

Primrose53 Thu 16-Jul-26 10:04:25

Shabana gets the Chancellor job so where does that leave the migrant crisis? She was the only one doing anything about it.

AGAA4 Thu 16-Jul-26 10:15:57

Primrose I prefer to think they were showing respect to KS but you can think what you like of course.
